Prospero-win brings native Windows game support to homebrew PS5

Developer mpereiraesaa has released the first public build of prospero-win, a homebrew app that can run Windows games directly on a homebrew enabled PS5. Using its own copy of Wine, no PC is required and the games run directly on the PS5. Version 0.1.0 is described as experimental, with a handful of games reportedly working quite well already.

Games go through prospero-win's own x86 translator. Direct3D 8-11 games draw through DXVK and Vulkan and older OpenGL games, 2D games and GDI programs are supported too. DualSense is supported including xinput compatible controls, rumble and custom mappings for keyboard and mouse games - or you can even plug in a USB KBM to play.

It's own launcher displays your games, each with its own profile for graphics and control settings.

Release Notes said:
  • 64-bit Windows programs run natively on the PS5's x86-64 CPU. 32-bit games run through prospero-win's own x86 translator.
  • Direct3D 8, 9, 10 and 11 games draw through DXVK and Vulkan. Older OpenGL games are supported too, and so are 2D games and Windows programs that draw with GDI.
  • You can play with the DualSense (Xbox-style XInput, analog sticks, triggers and rumble, plus custom mappings for keyboard-and-mouse games) or with a USB keyboard and mouse.
  • Game audio comes out of the PS5's own audio output.
  • A launcher lists your games. Each game has a profile with its graphics and control settings.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Half-Life, Counter-Strike 1.6, OpenArena, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Space Cadet Pinball are on the working list, with some needing extras such as DXVK or LAV Filters in the game folder.

There are limits: only one program runs at a time, so installers and games needing launchers won't run and there's no 16bit Windows or DOS support. Also, mouse wheels wont' work yet and nothing with DRM or anti-cheat will run.

As far as gaming goes, I think computing is approaching a point where it doesn't need to get better, and is constantly getting smaller. With the development of all these compatibility layers, it feels like we're getting to a place where in the next decade, pretty much any computer on any architecture can be your "gaming PC" and that's really exciting to me.

I kind of feel like for the ps5 at least it'll be fully windows os supported by the time everything is unlocked for it. Wishful thinking but anything is possible in the cfw world.

Do better and stop promoting low quality AISlop on what used to be a site for quality human made work. You're a disgrace to the scene
We're just covering the news. Did we endorse it at any point ? Do we force it upon you? Do some gremlins visit your house and install it on your PS5? No. If you don't have anything to contribute to the scene yourself besides your anti-AI rhetoric then keep quiet.

Vulkan is kinda weird to get used to. After decades of OpenGL and DirectX... Vulkan still feels weird to use for me.
It's kinda crazy seeing Vulkan2DX translator, wonder if it can be used to improve compatibility of new software with "legacy hardware". Nice.

32-bit games go through prospero-win's own x86 translator.
AMD64 is fully backwards compatible with the older x86 ISA, the only potential obstacles are the kernel and libraries. I'm curious to know why translating the code in realtime was chosen over another, more passive method like what Linux has. The PS5 runs a proprietary fork of FreeBSD so this shouldn't be a problem in theory? The code for the program loader and WinAPI are almost certainly lifted from WINE which means 32-bit versions already exist.

So is this Wine ported to the native PS5 OS or is it a fancier version of WINE designed arround the PS5 hardware ala proton?

Even Modern Vintage Gamer is praising the unprecedented influx of AI-assisted homebrew simply pouring onto the scene - this is something to be celebrated, not discouraged. Our machines can do more now - that’s great. Anyone can review the source and even make “organic” forks if they please, all AI’s doing here is enabling rapid development of applications that, normally, would take months to develop from a proof of concept to a working solution. They won’t all be winners, but they’re available as opposed to non-existent. As you say, there’s no ball and chain - nobody’s forcing anyone to download or use “AI slop” if they don’t want to.
