You don't have to compile anything. I can't teach you how to use a computer. But you could show GPT the script and then ask questions around that rather than expecting it to do it all for you.

No reason to be insulting. I know very well how to use a computer, but scripts and coding are over my head and not that I enjoy that but I can't wrap the logic around it and that's that. I did ask GPT but it can not build the code and create the executable as it's beyond it's capabilities. It could create the script, but I'd still have to install python and work on getting it to execute/compile or whatever that script to make the file, so it's still a road block.

I'm not going to continue this back and forward so you can take more digs. Clearly enough you know how to do coding and scripts and it's second nature to you, but not everyone is on that level as it's just not easy, most people aren't, or coding and scripting would be a fast food employee level of paycheck behind it.

Where in here was I insulting?

I think you're being defeatist. Just keep asking ChatGPT about the parts you don't understand until you get somewhere. E.g. show it the specific script link I sent above, and start with 'How can I run this, I'm not really proficient with a command line. I have Windows. Or macOS or whatever.'

You have free access to the ultimate learning aid that can teach you this far better than I can.

Last edited by patters,
Actually I did do that, awhile ago, then again now. The result in the end is that it says that it can not create a windows executable as it doesn't have the tool kit to do so. It further adds what you said, it can make a script, but I'd have to install and learn how to use python to run that script to create the file I am looking for so basically it went into a giant circle.

I would imagine I'd need something smarter like Claude, which I do not have nor ever used before where it has a tool kit to make a windows executable and that's basically where I stopped at. This wasn't some 30 seconds, wahhh it's too hard thing.

This is simpler than that. Python runs that script as just a text file. It doesn't need to build it.
Once Python is on your machine then .py files can be run directly, like .bat files on Windows.
I'm not a Windows user so I'm not sure whether you can run it just by typing the name of the .py file into the command prompt, or whether you have to put 'python3 myscript.py'. Hopefully that gets you closer.

I'm not sure suggesting people use ChatGPT is a good idea these days.

Anyway, if all else fails, the solution has already been suggested:
run a VM for an old Windows app
If you don't want to go through the trouble of setting up your own VM, I expect it's easy enough to download a pre-configured one these days. It is the ultimate solution for getting old Windows programs running, though it is not always the most expedient one.

If you're just trying to run a Python script, then indeed that is simply a matter of typing one line at the command prompt. There's not much to "learn". If you are getting an error message, then it would be helpful to know exactly what that error message says.

Hello gentlemen. I did my best (using AI) to make a simple web interface for @patters compilation builders.

Instructions:
1. Unzip folder
2. Open and view gba-builder folder
3. Open index.html
4. Follow the on-screen instructions
  • Select builder
  • Add your files
  • Build & Download
Thank you for your hard work @patters! If you would like me to remove this webapp, I will do so.

Very nice. This is what open source is all about. You took my work and used it to deliver more value, without having to engineer from the ground up. As long as I'm credited (which I am) that's fine!
