Steam Frame price revealed, waiting open until 17th September

After an accidental leaking of their review video from Linus Tech Tips last week, we somewhat knew that news on Steam's latest VR venture was imminent. Today the product page has been updated, with a few new details revealed for the first time. The headset is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and runs an ARM64 version of SteamOS. Through this you'll be able to natively run some of your Steam games directly on the headset itself. It should be noted however that the Steam Frame is listed as a "streaming-first" device, introducing some genuinely interesting tech to make wireless VR streaming feasible. There will be "Steam Frame Verified" markers coming to the storefront to give you an idea of what will run well when untethered though.

But let's get to the important part: the price. The Steam Frame is available in two flavours, with the cheaper model featuring 256GB of UFS storage, and its more expensive counterpart bumping that up to 1TB. Both models do feature a Micro SD card slot for expansion however. You can find the pricing below:
  • 256GB Kit - £889 / $1059
  • 1TB Kit - £1089 / $1299
Both variants do come with Half-Life: Alyx included, though there's no indication that the game will run natively on the platform.

Those interested in picking one up for themselves can now sign up for the wait list, much in the same manner as the Steam Machine. This list will remain open until 6pm on the 17th of September here in the UK, with all submissions then randomised. Within a day of the list closing, you can expect an email saying how long you're likely to be waiting for your unit.

I signed up for a reservation. Price is steeper than I would have liked, but I've been saving. If the streaming is as magical as I am hearing in reviews, this is going to be awesome. If not, I will probably return it and go without a headset for a bit. I can't stand being tethered will never again give all that data to Facebook.

The 256GB costs $1,529 and the 1TB is $1,859 Canadian; a 1TB for me is over $2,000 after tax. I would definitely be happier if it were around $1,200, but we all know that is not going to happen. I reserved a 256GB because I mainly plan on using it to stream from my PC.

Atleast it won't have built in surveillance software built into the OS like Zucks headsets. Everyone was expecting it to be a grand+ anyways.
What I'm really excited for is the increased support for emulating x86 games for Android and ARM based platforms from Valve after this gets released, especially for stuff like the AYN Thor

I think we all know the Valve 2026 script by now. They'll make 250 of these, sell them out, and then call it a successful launch because they sold out.

$1K is not going to move many units. Not that Valve has any control over component costs, but this is too expensive for fad hardware when the fad is waning anyway.

That part was announced way back yeah. They're making use of a translation layer to play x86 games on ARM too. Pretty much the same as what's used in Winlator/GameNative on Android atm. And with an 8 Gen 3 powering it, it should be capable of some solid stuff.

I knew about that announcement, yeah, but i figured they were still waiting for the industry to make the leap and that time hasn't arrived yet.
the fact that they're already supporting ARM for the steam frame could mean they're implanting that type of architecture to a "Steam Deck 2" as of this moment. Proton 11 already supports FEX x86 emulation, so it's just a matter of time.
 
Its expensive but to be honest, in comparison with the Steam Machine (overpriced btw) i dont considere it way overpriced.
After the price Steam is asking for the SM and current Deck prices, i was expecting a lot more.

The specs are quite good, minus the LCD part. OLED would be so much better IMO.

Sadly i will never be able to try it since is way out of my price league :(

definitely cheaper than expected, itll be really nice to have the new standard not be a quest at the same time that the overall possession of vr game development has been returned to the indies, i imagine this will be a massive step away from the mobile game slop landscape that meta so graciously fucked the industry with

pancake lenses is pretty much a given at this point, maybe someday actually experience a headset with oled displays but ive come to realize its never to be expected anymore

oh look, another overpriced valve thing that partially can be blamed on market conditions and largely can be blamed on GabeN and co's seemingly incompetent abilities to cut any deals with the companies making the components whatseoever
