Kojima Productions partners with XBOX for the development of 'PHYSINT', after PlayStation steps away

Hideo Kojima's return to the action-espionage genre with PHYSINT will continue in partnership with XBOX. The game was initially announced as a PlayStation-exclusive in 2024, but the publisher decided to step away.

"As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project," explained Hideo Kojima in an online post. "PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward."

Asha Sharma, XBOX CEO, added the following: "Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX".

For its part, PlayStation provided an update on the matter by saying: "After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future."

PHYSINT is still in its early development stages. Last year, Kojima noted that the game won't be out for another "five or six" years. However, there has been some progress with the game as Kojima Productions planned to kick off casting, scans, and performance capture sessions in 'late 2026'.

To be honest, I couldn't care tbf.

Apart from being a fan of the earlier Metal Gear titles (V been terrible, but likely for its reason), nothing has come from Kojima thats been as good.

Id say he is a very over hyped guy, if it wasn't because of his fan base, Redus' fan base and DelToro.... DS wouldn't have been as successful.

I have tried so many times and normal games wouldn't have had as many chances. But the game is very over rated and its crap.

2 not even attempted to give it a try.

So to hear this has been cancelled.... likely because its not reached anything impressive to show and Sony maybe saw his hype alone cant keep it going.

And no offence, but Xbox would take any random shit thrown at em.

They're already expecting his fanbase to be their saviour.... other people making new games while Microsoft keep remaking the same old stuff..

They'll blow shed loads of money at this and likely wont save them and they'll still be questioning why not making new games and remaking old games and third party isn't saving xbox.

To be expected. Death stranding 1&2, while I kinda like the game, didn't reach the financial performance target they were hoping for. Sony is not about to put in another hundreds of millions to fund his novelty project as his Exec buddies at Sony have mostly left the company in the past couple of years.

Also let face it, Kojima is kinda of a dick and up his own ass most of the time, dude thinks he's a fucking rock star. While Konami was also a dick when they were dealing with him, they at least kept him grounded, somewhat.

I mean, if he wants to make a movie go and make a movie, eh? :teach:

Can't fault Sony here really.
Kojima hate is so forced it's laughable. "novelty projects" seriously? Everything he puts out consistently pulls a high 80-90 meta critic scores. Consistent GOTY contenders. sure, novelty

If you're looking for copy paste garbage, just say it.

"he thinks he's a rock star" because he wants to actually create something new and actually makes you think, rather than a dopamine buzz to squeeze microtransactions.
