Xbox to offer digital licences with physical disc purchases

In the wake of Sony's shift to a digital-only ecosystem within the next year, Xbox have today announced a surprising scheme. Aiming to offer physical buyers the same benefits as digital ownership, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, the company is set to hand out digital licences to owners of physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. Details are a little slim at the moment, but what we do know is that thousands of title will be supported out of the gate, with each disc providing "one revokable digital licence". It is also confirmed that redeeming this digital licence will not affect your ability to use the physical disc, with it continuing to function as normal.

The press release makes a point of stressing this as a part of a broader commitment to game preservation, potentially suggesting a continued support for physical media in the coming console generation. This new feature is set to go live for Xbox Insiders on August 31st, with sign ups for the programme possible via the Xbox Insider Hub app.

People tried with the Forza games and it doesn't work, really hope it does in the future. Horizon 3 in particular would be huge because of Xbox Play Anywhere because of its PC port.
If they contain licensed cars (or music), that might be the reason. The licensing may make it impossible legally, even though logically it seems like it should be allowed. It's not as if they don't want this to work for all games.

Its still the same bs with "you don't own nothing" and MS can delete or shut down your license whenever they want.
but you can still use the disc the digital license is just a bonus unlike them e-waste cards with a code on them eventually every single one of them will not work

I dont get what people find hard about this.

It'll simply do what pc used to do, use disc to prove you own the game.

In theory Microsoft could still:
• go down the digital only method like Sony
• block pre owned gaming (which xbox had planned)

This is just another push towards the same objective as Sony, but itll give hopefully accurate data on what gamers are actually doing.

And focus on that area.

Like, is it worth paying to stupidly have devs port retro games over when only a tiny % even use it (vs just making an actual emulator of its previous windows os system running sorry xbox console).

In the end your literally handing over data to MS as facts more gamers now gone over to digital only.

Whereas Sony may have had actual data records of sales off PSN.

And looking how terrible MS have been doing for a long time and plus its MS and they never do anything right, they probably had nothing reliable as its sh1tbox app trying to be like apple and steam an AIO app store....

Doesnt do what it should be doing.

I really would expect a better attack on a great pro-consumer MSFT strategy from an obvious Sony fanboi than this. "Microsoft could still..." is cute. Microsoft could still give us hundreds of free games. They could still send every Xbox owner a check for $500. There are lots of things MSFT could do. Until they do it, there's no argument.

Of course MSFT is getting rid of physical discs. Why on Earth wouldn't they? PC users gave them up decades ago without whining, and no amount of incessant whining from the 2% of Playtstation fans who care about this is going to change anything. Focus on that. Since you obviously don't own Xbox, why do you even care about this great announcement for Xbox fans? Go back to hating Sony for doing the sensible thing and stop trying to downplay a great plan that Sony absolutely cannot match because they were not smart enough to serialize their physical media.

awww got a sore fanboy here and like Nintendo fanboys its funny when you state facts, their defence is you don't own said console.

Sorry to upset you, but I own ever single console, so trust me, the stuff said is factual.

And I'm laughing with your claim about pc.... Forgetting one major issue....

MICROSOFT HAD IGNORED PC AS A GAMING MARKET FOR DECADES....

It never had dedicated hardware, not all users instantly upgraded DISC DRIVES, games for ages on PC would come as multiple CDs then DVDs and by time BD came, people still hadn't upgraded....

By this point people using PC figured the likes if Steam and other digital stores made it easier, no need to buy or upgrade disc drives anymore.

That's why it became mainstream digital only, cloud based services made it where people didn't need disc drives anymore and is why laptop/pcs these days don't include them.

BUT WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE IGNORED PC MARKET

We are talking about Microsoft essentially have already been doing this, its NOTHING NEW, just they keep fuckin it up, I mean you can't deny the facts that Microsoft had already wanted to stop gamers buying pre owned.

But again, this disc to digital isn't anything new, they've doing this since the XBX1 and its EXACTLY what its BC was.

As for SONY, YUP they are a set if CUNTS for forcing digital only, I'm not interested in your flawed reasons and for PC as that just shows how now VALVE are stepping up, seeing PC as a market, ohhhh NOW Microsoft wants to copy.

But console gamin advantages is its dedicated hardware, disc drives or other media, unlike PC devs know everyone has said equipment to use the game. Unlike PC having to support CDs and DVDs until everyone migrated.

Then DVD to BD, simply cheaper to go digital.

But when digital means you own nothing, yea Sony and eventually when Microsoft stops wasting money doing shit the hard way, they too will be digital only.

And while your mom ma's breast milk was still fresh on your face, I knew this day would come and decades ago said that will be the end if console gaming for me. Ill never buy Digital Only consoles.

Uh, no. You need to re-read the details of this disc to digital feature again. BC just played OG/ 360 games from the disc, it did not install the game to your hard drive (with a digital license) and allow you to play those games without the disc inserted in the console.

What is the number 1/ most used operating system on PC? And who owns it?
Games for Windows has been around forever, its not like they are just suddenly trying to get into the market.

lol

Remember how long it took PC to actually get a single and dedicated controller input and GUI like consoles.....

Thats the whole point of my statement, Microsoft had sole domination over the PC market, they just failed to see it and use it, until now Valve steps up.

And we get this promise better integration xbox app that just fails like Microsoft do.

Microsoft is not trying to compete with Valve/ Steam though, in fact they are incorporating Steam into the next gen (Helix) console even. Microsoft is after all the #1 game distributor in the world. I'm sure they don't care where you buy they're games from, they still get they cut. And the Xbox app works fine for me, on tablet, phone, and PC; so not sure what you mean by it is a failure.
