Is this applying a look-up table to the colour values ('Curves' in PhotoShop, vs. Fizeau's 'Levels'), or is it doing local contrast enhancement that would let details show in both dark and light areas, like this:?
(advantage: each part of the image looks more or less like it would to your eye after pupil dilation/contraction; disadvantage: halo artifacts around strong contrast edges - e.g. sky is bright next to dark cliff but gets unrealistically darker next to bright clouds - if you look at a large area)
