Remasters for Fallout 3 and New Vegas announced, Fallout 5 still in development

Amidst news of layoffs and cancellations in the wake of Xbox's larger changes, Bethesda has today come out with a statement discussing their active projects. In this we see Bethesda's three major focuses in Starfield, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls. Outside of confirming that both Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls 6 are still in active development, we get some new news in the announcement of remasters for both Fallout 3 and New Vegas. You can find this announcement below.

The Future of Fallout said:
Fallout is one of our biggest priorities today. Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination, and we have multiple Fallout projects in active development right now.

Fallout 76 continues to be home to millions of players exploring Appalachia together. With nearly 70 free updates released to date, the journey is far from over. In fact, we have a major Fallout 76 expansion planned for next year: Raven Rock, a prequel story to Fallout 3.

Fallout 4, the most award-winning game in the franchise, just celebrated its 10-year anniversary and recently passed over 35 million copies sold, continuing to attract a new audience every year.

We also know many players want to revisit previous Fallout experiences. While we're not announcing any dates today, we have been working on remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Fallout Shelter continues to be the most popular way to experience Fallout on the go, with more than 250 million players. There’s more ahead for Fallout Shelter, including new Seasons. An unscripted Fallout Shelter television project is also in the works with our partners at Amazon Studios and Kilter Films.

We'd like to congratulate Kilter Films and Amazon Studios on the 10 Emmy nominations for Fallout Season 2. Production on Season 3 is already underway.

And while we won't host a traditional Fallout Day broadcast this year, we're already planning something special for Fallout's 30th anniversary in 2027, when Fallout Day will be celebrated live in Washington, D.C.

At the time of writing, no release window has been announced for either title. Those interested in the full statement can find it linked below.

Only 16 of the original New Vegas developers remain at the studio.

the linked article is from 2015, but if 16 is the current number, out of nearly 300 employees (285 as of 2025), yeah i'm not surprised that current obsidian is nothing like what they're praised for in the past...

it's like bungie, virtually nobody that made halo 3 still works there (there's like 5 or 6 iirc, out of a couple hundred), which explains why marathon and destiny were(are) perpetual, constant trainwrecks

watch them run like garbage filled with glitches and CTD day one than need 10+ patches just like everything else they release. got tired of CRASHesda a long time ago
if oblivion remastered is any indication, they'll give up by the second patch, oblivion only got 2 patches and is still in virtually the same state it was at launch

they thought they had a honey pot since oblivion did so well in the past a remaster would surely make them even more success right? well it bombed so hard and they fell flat on their fucking face! you'd think they would have learned from that they no one wants fucking remasters anymore...but nope here we are again

I wonder if Obsidian will be handling (besides the new unannounced FO game) the remaster for new vegas given that they are somewhat in a pickle as well and looking for new projects to do.

I'm concerned about FO5 though. It sounds like it could be another 10 years to release...which would make it 20 since the last main FO game.

Out of those employees, they all have their part of course, but Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky are really the most important names they can attach to the project from a fully classic Fallout point of view. Feargus Urquhart is still involved as well, though he's mostly given executive credit. Chris Taylor made the SPECIAL system, but hasn't been a part of the franchise since the 90s. Same goes for Mark O'Green who wrote a LOT of the character dialogue from 1 and 2. Josh Sawyer (FONV) is still around, and is probably the best sign we have towards the game being well-written. As linked, yeah Avellone is long gone, which is a concern--he was basically the biggest lore bookkeeper for the series for decades.

However, the remaining staff of the Fallout-centric Obsidian already took their crack at an RPG, twice over, and it was imo, atrocious. The Outer Worlds was very shallow, both in writing and its RPG elements. Josh Saywer, though, had no part in it, which means maybe he can salvage an attempt at Fallout, if they're all collaborating together and not split across multiple mediocre projects.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Fallout series, but I've also seen a lot of exchanges about entries like Fallout 76. Are there lists of the known good ones and bad ones to avoid or? Bethesda hasn't had a great track record for a while now from what I understand, so is it even worth it now?

76 really isn't as bad as people say (anymore), though the only one i know people say to avoid is brotherhood of steel
