Xbox to increase in price again in August, Series S set to hit $500

Remember when you could get an Xbox Series S for $300? Those were the days. Microsoft has today announced the latest in their console price hikes, seeing their once-affordable system now exceed what the more powerful Series X cost at launch. Set to come into effect on the first of August, you can find an overview of the increases below:
  • Xbox Series S (512GB): $399 ➜ $499 (25% Increase)
  • Xbox Series S (1TB): $449 ➜ $599 (33% Increase)
  • Xbox Series X (1TB Digital): $599 ➜ $749 (25% Increase)
  • Xbox Series X (1TB): $649 ➜ $799 (23% Increase)
In their press release, Microsoft shine a light on the state of the industry, noting that games consoles are being hit particularly hard on the back of them typically being sold at a loss out of the gate. With less headroom to eat costs, they're inevitably passed onto consumers. With Microsoft expecting another doubling of storage and memory prices by fall of 2027, future price increases also seem likely.

I know you don't trust it, but if you ask AI whether or not any AI models are profitable, it will confirm that many already are and cite examples.
AI hallucinations are not a source, all you have to do is show a single earnings report to prove me wrong. Nvidia is the only profitable AI-adjacent company, and that's because they sell the tangible hardware powering it, not just snake oil like the rest of the industry.

For that matter, you could simply explain to me how you would go about making an AI model profitable. All anyone has come up with so far is selling ad space in conversations, and that's failed to keep most websites profitable for decades now. It has also failed in the most basic of human-driven tasks, such as taking orders for drive-thru customers at McDonald's. So what's your grand proposal?

Am I reading it right that it will only work with NTSC consoles?

I noticed that as well and AFAIK it doesn't make sense if this is a true repro.

Again AFAIK, if anything it would be the NTSC-J JP MD that it would be incompatible with due to the physical cart.

definitely feels more like a niche collectors piece then a copy you'll use regularly, unlike paying $80 for GTA 6 and just getting a code in a box, there's much cheaper ways to play Sonic 1 if you rather prefer it

I just used it as an example of companies exploiting the retro scene as well as a joking about the cost.

Bearing in mind that unless they did something like custom moulds, MD repros are relatively cheap to make since they don't use a lockout chip.

I just wonder how many people will buy this hoping it appreciates in value, as opposed to just liking the product.

How nice of Microsoft to match Nintendo Switch 2 price but they should actually make it a bit more expansive since it has 512GB.

funny thing is Microsoft raising the Xbox price when their part of the problem with their AI model? pure greed
Steering the price is quick and easy, bringing down or offline entire AI scaffolding and products not so much.

If I were you I would keep my eyes peeled.

When you realize there is a rumor that Microsoft is going to raise the price of Xbox again in August. lmao

In spite of the fact that she is widely seen as one of the most competent people in the industry and one of the 3 most successful companies in history also views her that way and has promoted her for that reason. She's been on the job all of four months, and you female-hating incels are already ignorantly throwing around insults, this time because Xbox have increased their prices like every other console maker.

Please be less pathetic in the future, incel gamerboys. It's embarrassing even by your standards.
I don't mind the lady, also.

I find these price-related news extremely funny.

When Microsoft makes its Xbox more expensive, they're a bunch of greedy bastards. When Apple does it, they're inhuman scum that treats their customers like garbage. But... when Valve does it, it's not their fault and they should be forgiven as if they were the second coming of Christ...

I don't know, seems funny to me.

One thing is sure. If the videogame market does not crash now, with all of these price increases (consoles, games and services), plus global recession and possible AI bubble burst, then it will never crash :P.
It will mean that there are enough wealthy people buying games and hardware to keep the industry afloat, I guess.
I'm convinced into getting a new console, the Switch 2.
I was originally gonna hold off as if things were normal and I could just buy one later at the launch price when games I want to play are out, but the Steam Deck prices shocked me into reality and I immediately got a Switch 2 before the price increase. Buying a console at launch price is an investment now as they're all guaranteed to go up in price for years to come.
