Xbox to increase in price again in August, Series S set to hit $500

Remember when you could get an Xbox Series S for $300? Those were the days. Microsoft has today announced the latest in their console price hikes, seeing their once-affordable system now exceed what the more powerful Series X cost at launch. Set to come into effect on the first of August, you can find an overview of the increases below:
  • Xbox Series S (512GB): $399 ➜ $499 (25% Increase)
  • Xbox Series S (1TB): $449 ➜ $599 (33% Increase)
  • Xbox Series X (1TB Digital): $599 ➜ $749 (25% Increase)
  • Xbox Series X (1TB): $649 ➜ $799 (23% Increase)
In their press release, Microsoft shine a light on the state of the industry, noting that games consoles are being hit particularly hard on the back of them typically being sold at a loss out of the gate. With less headroom to eat costs, they're inevitably passed onto consumers. With Microsoft expecting another doubling of storage and memory prices by fall of 2027, future price increases also seem likely.

I do feel that PS6 and next gen Xbox are going to cost over $1,000 with not many gamers buy them, also poor sale with software.
I'm morbidly curious to see. So far, only consoles that previously were sold at sane prices for years have been priced over $500 for base models, so they already have install bases to sell games to. The Steam Machine isn't required in any way to play Steam games. What happens when the lowest cost of entry is $1000+ to be able to play new exclusive games? Personally, I refuse to pay over $500 for a game console and will go full PC if that happens. Yes, it will be expensive as fuck, but I can go full pirate and make up for the high cost that way.

Sony must be tempted at this point to increase the price of the Pro. 🤣

I'm not a betting man, but if I was I'd bet they'll do it.
it's not a matter of "if" but when, a lot of people are already predicting component costs doubling by the end 2027

the only other thing i'm annoyed by are gamers still acting surprised at announced price hikes as if we weren't warned that inflation, tariffs, AI-induced shortages weren't gonna cause this

ALL hardware with RAM and storage WILL continue to go up in the near future.

Switch 2 is next. I don't know how they're holding on to just a $50 increase -- I think it'll go even higher.
It absolutely will. Nintendo producing a huge amount of consoles before the prices went up too much turned out to be a great decision in hindsight - it's the reason they can wait until Sept. to raise it. The Switch 2 will be the last decently price console (at launch) for a long time.

They never seem to blame Ram/Storage corperations for allowing this to happen either it's just "AI's fault. "
Companies are always gonna do what makes them the most money unless the government steps in to regulate them. Not only did the federal government put zero regulations on AI corps buying up the entire consumer supply of RAM, storage, and GPUs, they sue any state that tries to regulate them as well. Add in a losing war that closes the Strait of Hormuz, and the price of fuel goes way up, causing the price of everything else to go way up.

So yeah, everything Trump touches turns to shit. Only person I've ever heard of that was able to bankrupt a casino.
