Grand Theft Auto VI pre orders go live tomorrow, physical release limited to code in box

The delays may be behind us, but the news isn't all good for Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar have today announced that pre-orders for the game will go live tomorrow, on the 25th of June. Those who pre-order will get the Vintage Vice City Pack, a small throwback to one of their older titles. With the game launching on the 19th of November, fans will be able to start their pre-loads a full week early to ensure there's enough time to get things ready. So what's the bad news here? As you've probably seen from the title, there's no true physical release planned for the game. The retail version will instead feature a code in the box, being available to buy at the same time as pre-loads going live.

Rockstar also announced an Ultimate Edition for the game, throwing in an assortment of "vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action" for those willing to spend big. Barring further delays, the game will be available to play on the 19th of November.

It's e-waste plain and simple. Wasting resources to put a byte onto an entire cartridge. Just don't even bother releasing a GCK at that point. The point of owning physical games on switch 2 is that you can still pop it in the console and get right into playing it. Even if there's an update you can update the game later and hop right in without any waiting just like old days.

I'm holding out hope that the PS6 version is gonna come out on disc!
It's possible and cheaper, too, but for now if people want to play the full game they'll need to buy the $100 edition (or £90 in the UK).

Rumor is the case will also include a poster size map of Vice City/ Leonida, along with the game download code. Who knows if true, but still be cool to have, for same price as digital.

Can Rockstar really afford that? It could be too expensive to include with every empty $80/$100 box they publish. 😭

Damn! As an old school player, this is super sad. For one side, the downfall that physical editions have endured for so many years now. And on the other side, a damn digital game that means that someday, you won't be able to play it anymore. No good sides to this.

Old school or new to the gaming world, this is a travesty, a spit in the face. I just like my games there, put them in the console and play, today, tomorrow, or 15 years in the future, like all my other games.

I don't know why people defend this abuse. It's just something so stupid that I never thought it would get where it is now.

As Apollo Justice once said: "Well, I guess that's it. Civilization over."

Millions upon millions downloading th3 same game . I'm sure they're won't be any server issues......

Lmfao 100 to 1 this will be a EPIC FAILURE for launch of any game in history...

You're right though years down the line there'll be PS5/PC pirated copies.

This is also their way to fight piracy, but the game is just way overhyped and I have GTA V fatigue.

Game pre loads start a week earlier than actual game release, so its not like everyone will be downloading it same time midnight, day of release.

I don't believe that for a second. if you do a search for that you can't find any more info whatsoever making that claim. But you WILL find a lot of articles that say "GTA VI Will Require an Always On Internet Connection for Its Online Mode". Like gee. No shit? Never would have thought. It's like saying "GTA VI Confirmed to Require You Have Your PS5 or Xbox Turned On to Play!!!" lmao

Hey. Thanks for this. Apparently it's one of those dumb 30-day online check-in policy requirement for ALL digital games purchased on the PlayStation Store after the March 2026 firmware update. So stupid that you have only 30 days license before you have to validate it again.

Come on. That 30 day check in thing was already debunked as being nonsense.

It costs too much for them, but it's totally fine to charge $100 for a code in a box?? What the heck.

Yes, it's fine for them to charge $100 for a code in a box. Why? You may not like getting a code and I do understand why some people wouldn't like that, but why would they charge less for it than they do for just buying it digitally to begin with? That's the price of the game. Getting a code vs disc vs digital has nothing to do with the price. They're all priced the same.

They still haven't shown gameplay of GTA VI.

I'm not expecting ground breaking realistic graphics (I'm actually tired of that 💩), just want to see the game being played!

I love all these negative comments talking about epic fails, etc.
It's GTA - They would never fail...
As a matter of fact, news is circulating, they've already gotten 39 Million Pre-Orders at $100 a pop!
That's not a failure!

The numbers may be false, but I do know pre-orders are going wild and $100 for the Ultimate Edition isn't bad at all.

Never really played GTA, do with that what you will.
Pre-Orders in gaming culture are all too common. We don't even know what the game actually looks like yet, and yet a lot of people are willing to put forward money on what is essentially a bet the company will deliver.
And no physical release is always a concern. Welcome to the death of software ownership.

Given the universal acceptance of the newish technology, I ask ChatGPT to summarize the comments in this thread:

"Whine, b!tch, moan" was its summary.

I should prolly make that my signature since it pretty much applies to every thread in the News forum on GBATemp.
