Grand Theft Auto VI pre orders go live tomorrow, physical release limited to code in box

The delays may be behind us, but the news isn't all good for Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar have today announced that pre-orders for the game will go live tomorrow, on the 25th of June. Those who pre-order will get the Vintage Vice City Pack, a small throwback to one of their older titles. With the game launching on the 19th of November, fans will be able to start their pre-loads a full week early to ensure there's enough time to get things ready. So what's the bad news here? As you've probably seen from the title, there's no true physical release planned for the game. The retail version will instead feature a code in the box, being available to buy at the same time as pre-loads going live.

Rockstar also announced an Ultimate Edition for the game, throwing in an assortment of "vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action" for those willing to spend big. Barring further delays, the game will be available to play on the 19th of November.

Is physical media even a thing these days? We've dug our own graves and we are getting into them like sheep.

No matter what side you're on, 99% of discs/key cards require downloads. Be that on PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo.

At least nintendo are giving out something you could resell in future, this code in box bollocks is where I draw the line.

Can't support those kind of customer-abuse practices, sorry. I'm out. Hope it gets game-shared into the ground to fleece TT for as much as possible.

No physical disc?! Suddenly the Game Key Cards don't sound too bad...
GKCs are still worse

Companies should be penalized for creating e-waste, its either a proper physical or nothing.
This isn't e-waste tho. That would be GKCs. I agree with you 100% but the physical edition is likely just a map in a case without a disc. Far better than e waste

You do understand the point of GKCs right? It's a way to preserve the second hand market while giving publishers a cheaper alternative to cartridges. With the exception of Pokopia, no first party nintendo games use GKCs so it's just the devs with the low effort ports that were going to just put a code in the box or the lowest capacity cartridge possible. And Pokopia probably only used the GKC cause nintendo only has 2 capacity options for cartridges, 10gb and 64gb and Pokopia was 12gb.

I'd even suggest that Pokopia being a GKC isn't exactly Nintendo's decision, even if they are a publisher. The reason is that the game itself in Japan is published by TPC alone, and they may have more sway in that regard.

But it seems rather funny for people to call GKCs worse than a code-in-box.

Oh boi.... Soon companies will just put codes on a piece of toilet paper. Make sure to wipe ass "after" using the code.
Both can only be used once.

Digital only provides the ability to fix the price, granted GTA V didn't drop a lot for a while

No second hand sales, control over retail, which they will now inevitably be held responsible for killing off

Locked content which is already created and in-game, thankfully it's all the stuff I don't care less about, never ever been bothered about cosmetics in game (I like shiny things in CS2, but only as they can be resold)

One things which hasn't been mentioned anywhere I've seen is the launch day problems. There is early access and preloading, which will alleviate a little, but other games have had issues and not close to the launch of this. They also weren't digital only

I can seem tens to hundreds of millions of users having paid $100 for a piece of paper, being unable to download or play the game at some point over launch. Rockstar won't care on bit, not will Take Two, they've been terrible corporations for many years now

Nobody talking about the way they sacked all the staff who tried to form a union? Reason for the last delay and the tactic worked it seems

I mean, i get you all and i do not want to defend this shit, but what exactly would you have gained by getting a disc that cannot fit the whole game so you still have to download it from their servers? It would have been basically the same. When they decide that you cant play the game anymore and shut down the servers than you couldnt play it with a Physical CD any more then with the Key. The times where whole Games fit on one CD are mostly over. I mean yeah there are still many games that would fit, but that will be less and less the case in the future. The best you can do nowadays is make Backups with cracks for all your games so you can play them no matter what happens.

For all of the people who believe the eshop is the messiah of modern gaming, which essentially gives you free cloud storage of all your purchases to enjoy for life and beyond, you ignore that for most older systems, the original console on which you purchased the game is required. Meaning if you’re like me, your ex girlfriend runs away with yours and the FBI won’t even take you seriously, they’re gone forever.

Then there’s the issue of account banning. Imagine if you’re like me and you got caught flashing at old ladies in your local supermarket, resulting in a ban for life, then the supermarket came to your house and took all of your groceries back. This is exactly the same thing.

You don’t own anything you bought on the eshop and you have nothing to cling to but trust to cement your relationship with that vile global corporation whose entire existence is to make more money than last year.

Games that do not fit on a single disc can span multiple discs, that's what's been happening with games on PS4.
And you can definitely play the entire thing on discs without downloading anything from the internet; you just be missing out on the latest game patches. But that's a tradeoff people willing to take to own their games when everyone else gets locked out from their purchases.
