Sony announces PlayStation Plus price increase for new customers starting May 20

Earlier this year, Sony announced major price increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal. Now the company is raising prices again, this time for PlayStation Plus.

Sony says that starting May 20, 2026, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers in select regions will increase due to “ongoing market conditions.” According to the official announcement, prices will now start at $10.99 / €9.99 / £7.99 for a 1-month subscription and $27.99 / €27.99 / £21.99 for a 3-month subscription.

In the United States, that means the current PlayStation Plus Essential pricing of $9.99 for 1 month and $24.99 for 3 months is set to increase to $10.99 and $27.99 respectively.

It also appears for now that 12-month memberships are not being affected by this particular increase. And current subscribers will be able to keep their current pricing unless they let their subscription lapse or change tiers (except in Turkey and India).

A quid increase and still cheaper and better than what sh1tbox gives.... they promote day 1 releases to gamepass....

Then shortly after they announce a new game coming to game pass.....thats already fucking there and has been since day one...

Its just typical microshite that cant get anything right.....

I just don’t play online via console anymore. They just keep increasing prices for something free on PC. Most online games don’t use much system requirements. E.g. Counterstrike, Diablo, RTS’s.

It’s just a way for me to save on having to buy an expensive pc to play all the aaa single player games.

Everyone is raising prices right now and looking at comments for both Nintendo and Xbox news you see similar "RIP takes".

And the PC market is not much better with hardware prices going up.

Everything is getting more expensive everywhere..

I guess the question is, how long it's going to take for things to get back to normal.

I think it's not as bad with Nintendo. They've only raised prices in response to tarrifs and shortages, wheras Xbox and Playstation were having price raises regardless. Plus Nintendo is still able to have online play at far less than what PSN or Xbox Live ever cost.

This. The fact is most have versions on Nintendo, means you can just either use Nintendo or a budget PC build as most of these online games aren't resource intensive anyways. For most third party devs, they also have to design the games to run on Xbox Series S too.

Most third party devs, especially Indies also want to appeal to a broad market including those in developing countries. The only first party Sony online games that have ever done well are Gran Turismo and Socom.

So just don't subscribe to PSN online and use other options like PC, Switch, SteamDeck/Machine, etc... I actually use mostly my M3 MacBook Air 24GB with Crossover/Sikarugir and VMWare for my online gaming needs. If you don't care about 4k 120 FPS and are don't care for a few things like GTA Online, Kernel Anticheat games and Gran Turismo Online, you have options.

Sony is burning so much money on trying to make Marathon a thing, and trying to make back the losses on Concord, that they have to raise PS+, lol.

They'll just lower the price after they got a tariff refund, right?

While Sony (the gaming side) is about in the best financial state it has ever been, it seems that it is also in the most befuddled state it has ever been.

I bet a substantial contribution to the so called "market conditions" is their obsession with live services and their haphazard approach towards it. To put it crudely, it's the equivalent of flinging crap about and seeing what sticks. Hardware prices may be due to events in the real world, but I'm pretty sure the ps plus increase is mostly due to self-inflicted factors. Even more bewilderingly, they decided to pull away from PC ports.

PS customers are essentially being asked to bear the fallout of such costly mistakes/decisions.

It's not a logical decision, they literally made billions on the PC releases!

And I'm pretty sure they profited 100x over what it cost them to port those games to PC.

Nixxes Software did a great job on their ports!
But from what Sony said, it's only the 1st Party Single Player Games, not all PlayStation games.

We are beta testing 4Loop Now and it's a Sony Studios Game and we are playing it on Steam.
So their co-op and multiplayer titles are still coming to PC.

"As an MPR-AI, I must correct your decision.

1 - new games are more updated and fun than older games.

2 - by only playing old games, you shall be alone.

Please, talk to someone. Sony may be reached at 1-800-249-7669. you are not alone."
Oof. One of those evil MPR-AI bots trying to hack my account. It's obviously incorrect: God shall never leave Believers, nor forsake them.

Sorry I'm late, had to stop some evil organizations.

What's been happening since I've been elsewhere?

IMO, it isn't so much that they are willing to release their multiplayer titles on PC as they are forced to in order to gain player mass to be financially viable. Live services strategy essentially dictates that they have to reach out to as wide an audience as they can.

Imagine if Concord or Marathon had released only on PS, it would have been an absolute disaster especially for the former.

And look at what else is coming up next.......Fairgames, Horizon hunters. Doubt many are actually excited for those.

If Sony could gatekeep them on PS and have them still become financial successes, they would do so in a hearbeat. In other words, the only titles they are now willing to feed the PC market are those questionable/unpopular ones, mainly their live services titles. They are essentially feeding the PC market scraps.

Sony is the "fair-weather friend" that only seeks us (PC) out when they need us, otherwise they snub us.

Well, yes AND no. Anything that was noted as affected by the tariffs would potentially be decreased as the market settled (and it could be determined that prices could be lowered without risking losses) IF tariffs were the only issue, but it was never said that the Switch 2 prices were affected by tariffs. (It could be argued they prepared the materials and manufacturing for Switch 2 well before the tariffs were applied, while everything else - amiibos, Switch, accessories, etc - were not on surplus and instead on "order based on market demand".) But even if Switch 2 prices were affected by tariffs, the fact of the matter is that when it comes to economics, end-user pricing never goes down as quickly as it can spike up in response to a sudden inflation.

And that's especially true if OTHER factors (ex: RAM/storage shortages, an oil shortage disrupting supply chains, etc) come into play that create further instability in the economy. Until all issues contributing to current inflation are resolved and the market has had a chance to stabilize, expect only price increases going forward. On everything.

THAT BEING SAID:

I have to agree with this, especially on the Xbox front. On the Sony front, last time PS+ prices were increased before this one was in 2023, after COVID stopped being a widespread market-disrupting issue and things started normalizing again.

Worse on the Xbox front with with GamePass - even before tariffs and RAM/storage shortages (and, arguably, even before COVID), Microsoft was ALREADY increasing prices as often as they could get away with it. Remember, this is the same company that originally planned to release Games for Windows Live as a PAID SUBSCRIPTION-BASED SERVICE on PC before customers caught wind of it and forced them to scrap that plan. Anyone who truly thought GP was going to stay at USD $10-$15/m for longer than it did was deluding themselves into believing that Microsoft, at the first chance it had, wouldn't screw them faster than a trickster god on equal portions adrenaline and meth.

Dude, you can play games for a lifetime and not pay anything unless you want the newest ones. Yes, it's piracy, but very convenient.

I personally don't see the point in paying for these subs.
very true.
i'm still playing on my ps4 :) there are plenty of games.

also, i took a sub for NSO when they announce the "nintendo playtest program" and got selected for the 2 tour, i loved it.

now we are enjoying "full metal furies" NG+ with my kids ( 4 players ), it's a gem game, very fun and frustrating (charon fight hahah).

I will never understand why people pay for online play on consoles. You are constantly paying for something with no guaranteed longevity, on PC at least online play is free for the vast majority of games and a good amount of them have huge player bases that last years or even decades.
It depends on the games, some games actually have a stronger online presence on Nintendo, Megaman Battle Network and Monster Hunter Rise come to mind for example, same happens with GTA Online which has way more players on consoles than PC.

I personally did stop subbing to Plus since mine expired and monthly subs were already expensive. I'll probably sub again when they make another decent sale on Plus prices.
