Twilight Princess PC port "Dusk" gets its first release

It wasn't too long ago we saw our first glimpse of Courage Reborn, another Twilight Princess PC port in the works based on last year's decompilation efforts. With each port offering its own take on what an enhanced version of the game could look like, it's a fantastic time to be a fan of the game. And for those wanting to jump back into Hyrule right now, good news has arrived. Dusk has had its first release.

Available for Windows, Mac (ARM and x86), Linux (ARM and x86), Android, and iOS, you will struggle to not have a way to play. Featuring controller-friendly menus, you really just need an ISO for the game to get started. Once that's loaded in, you're able to pick whether you want the classic GameCube experience, or a bunch of new quality of life and graphical changes as your starting point. This port features a great variety of tweaks, most notably for me including an on the fly way to mirror the overworld. Those who grew up playing the Wii version will find this invaluable.

Along with the release, we also got a brief trailer covering a lot of what's included:

A lot of this was fairly well known, with the only major announcement coming at the end with the tease of a randomiser mode. Those interested in getting this setup for themselves can find the downloads below. As mentioned before you will need to supply your own ISO.

If it wasnt for a few dumb choices I would actually really enjoy this. Though the dealbreaker for me is how they are handling higher framerates. Essentially instead properly using time delta and just making the game run at a higher framerate. They are instead using frame interpolation which.... to me is a dealbreaker.
It's an interesting approach that does maintain the original feel of the game though, and I can see that being something that others will enjoy. Either way Courage Reborn are implementing delta time for their higher framerates, so you will at least not be without a Twilight Princess port.

That is why I've been eyeing up that project more overall. Just because it avoids my biggest dealbreaker.

ok, so than do not use it.
I mean yeah I probably won't. I appreciate community efforts but it's a shame it took that approach.

Certain game engines are simply that way. Even blockbusters like Final Fantasy X didn't, and never have, supported more than 30FPS.

Yes this is a decomp so changes like that are possible. Appears the other PC port being made actually did go back and make said corrections to allow for native higher framerates.

a blast from the past, a lovely time capsule of mine, and a pleasure as well, fuck playing Twilight Princess again make me sobbing so hard right now..

The 4K texture pack makes it feel like a whole new game, in all the right ways... It's truly amazing. (I feel like the Wii version could have had much better and sharper textures than what we got. It comes off as a lazy port; I can't really distinguish it from the Gamecube version, not accounting for the mirroring.)

Release v1.2.0

What's New:

  • Added:Experimental D3D11 (Windows) and OpenGL ES (Android) graphics backends
    • This allows Dusklight to run on devices that don't support Vulkan 1.1, D3D12 or Metal, but be warned that performance and accuracy may suffer! These backends are provided on a best-effort basis.
  • Added: Capped FPS option: set any framerate limit
  • Added:"Area" output resampling option
    • Smoother resampler for both upscaling and downscaling from the internal resolution
  • Added: Many, many fixes and improvements to interpolation
  • Added: Better achievement logic for Skybook characters
  • Added: Autosave safety (no autosave after loading a state, no autosave after reset, etc.)
  • Added: Ctrl-R to reset now triggers on release, like the button combo
  • Added: Option to remove button binds with only controller (press same button again)
  • Added: Option to enable and disable texture replacements in-game
  • Fixed: Various crashes on all platforms (Goron Mines elevator & others)
  • Fixed: Off-center aim reticle on devices with "safe area" (notches, in-screen cameras, etc)
  • Fixed: Mipmap texture replacement regression in v1.1.1
  • Fixed: Softlock on title screen when resetting while saving
  • Fixed: Item wheel pause buffer now displays a synchronized (non-interpolated) frame
  • Fixed: PAL keyboard
  • Fixed: Shoulder buttons incorrectly setting analog values
  • Fixed: Ook and Zant jump locations
  • Fixed: "Fast Tears of Light" bug where tears could travel out of bounds
  • Fixed: macOS Game Mode on macOS <26
  • Fixed: Booting on macOS 14, and possibly booting on x64
  • Fixed: Rollgoal completion to scale better with Bigger wallets
  • Fixed: Dusklight gives better info when graphics backends fail to load
  • Fixed: Allow transform level in Editor to go up to 15
  • Fixed: Copy/delete effects on save screen
Known issues:

  • No solution has been found for the Adreno driver issues yet.

I'd argue this one needs it less since it really is just one click from the main menu anyway. Could be an idea for you to unify these into one launcher so people have a one stop shop for launching all their PC ports though. There'd definitely be utility in that.
there's a unified launcher for N64 ports, but it would be cool to see that idea expanded. A launcher for as many zelda ports as possible would be really cool ^_^

Oddly enough, the GCN version is the only version of Twilight Princess I've never played - Twilight Princess Wii was...my second Legend of Zelda game, from memory, after falling in love with Ocarina of Time 3D, and one of the few tolerable Wii games due to not using the damn motion controls much (pointer could be disabled in Options); then Twilight Princess HD came out and supplanted the older two, what with it looking better, controlling better, and having the Cave of Shadows via Wolf-Link amiibo.

So...it's kinda odd going back to the GCN version for Dusklight (and, presumably, Courage, when it's released); it's not at all what I'm used to!
...wonder if there's a way to make text boxes smaller; could've sworn HD text boxes were smaller than this...
