Nintendo announces price increases across the board, set to come into effect from September in western regions

After much speculation, Nintendo has finally followed their competitors in announcing price increases for their hardware.

You can find a breakdown of what's changing below:

Nintendo Switch 2
  • United States: $449.99 ➜ $499.99 (11% increase)
  • Canada: $629.99 ➜ $679.99 (7% increase)
  • Europe: €469.99 ➜ €499.99 (6% increase)
Nintendo Switch 2 Japanese-Language System
  • Japan: ¥49,980 ➜ ¥59,980 (20% increase)
Nintendo Switch OLED
  • Japan: ¥37,980 ➜ ¥47,980 (26% increase)
Nintendo Switch
  • Japan: ¥32,978 ➜ ¥43,980 (33% increase)
Nintendo Switch Lite
  • Japan: ¥21,978 ➜ ¥29,980 (36% increase)
Of note here is the fact that it's only the Switch 2 going up in price outside of Japan for the moment, with Nintendo's home turf getting hit harder both in the products that are affected and the amount they're going up. The price of Nintendo Switch Online will also be going up for Japanese users to better align with other regions, as well as the playing cards Nintendo continue to make and sell in the region.

These price changes will come into effect at different times based on both the region and the products in question. The Nintendo Switch 2 price increase for western regions is set to happen from the 1st of September, with the changes for the Japanese consoles and playing cards coming into play later this month. Japanese Nintendo Switch Online price increases will begin in July.

It should also be mentioned that this is likely not the last we've heard on the topic, with the press release mentioning price increases to follow for South Korean Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions, as well as price revisions for other regions not specifically touched on. You can find the full press release linked below.

I would never incite violence (sorry to my FBI and/or NSA agent) but at what point do we collectively tell the upper echelon of society that their days of hoarding wealth is over? Everything everywhere is more expensive and 99.999% of the planet is suffering from leisure products to your most basic needs. I'm tired, boss.

As soon as I heard the first rumor of price increases for Switch 2, I went out and bought one. After all the discounts and buying it in a state that has no sales tax, I got my Mario Kart bundle Switch 2 for just $472.

It could not just be related to components. The rising price in fuel costs affects pretty much all industries, for example, the increase in transport costs ends up being absorbed by the consumer, everything increases to scale.

With RAM prices coming down, they sure did choose a shitty time to raise prices. Feels scummy, honestly. RAM prices could be fully back to normal by the time these price hikes kick in, and that's just a scam at that point.
Eh, RAM prices are down like 20% after a 200% hike. Not really moving the needle. Price of solid state storage is also up.

Depends, allegedly shareholders were pushing for this and if Nintendo bought RAM and SSDs at a high it may be a while for this to trickle down.......if they want.

I haven't been monitoring RAM, but consumer SSDs are still 2-3 times what they were from what I recall.

Won't be surprised to see them pull a Sony and just have a 'sale' which is really the original price in Q4 if sales are bad.

This also presumes that nothing else changes e.g. a sudden war blocking a major shipping route, tariff war, etc. further driving up costs.

Man, supporting AI is just destroying the tech world around it. I really wonder how the slop producers sleep knowing just how much they’ve fucked everyone else?

I suspect allot of them either don't care or are ignorant, especially if they're benefiting (or believe they are) themselves e.g. firing a bunch of people, cutting costs, cutting production time, 'vibe coding' their work for them, etc.

Even with 'normal' people, every time I hear someone say 'I asked ChatGPT' I ask them if they've checked the source as AI hallucinations are a thing and they don't seem to be. So I doubt they have any clue about the shortages.

Nintendo better start cranking out some first-part bangers to push hardware sales, or these will sit on store shelves. I don't think Splatoon Raiders and Star Fox are going to carry the system sales through the holiday season.

You're telling me Fantastic Mr Star Fox 64 isn't a system seller?

Nintendo has been long pressured by investors to raise Switch 2 prices, and they finally gave it in. It wasn't Nintendo's fault on this one.

"They gave in" and "it wasn't their fault" one after the other makes this a pretty wild statement. :wtf:

If true, they chose to give in, so that doesn't shift the blame away from them.

Every time I see people talking about RAM prices finally going down, I go over to look at the price charts on PCPartPicker and absolutely nothing has changed.

Maybe we shouldn't have locked the entire world down for 3 years over a mild virus and printed endless billions of new money causing massive inflation, devaluating all of our savings, cause a global recession and fucking up the cost of everything?
