Sony appears to have raised refurbished PS5 Slim prices by $100 on PlayStation Direct

Earlier this year, Sony confirmed a broad round of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal price increases, with the new prices taking effect on April 2. Now it looks like Sony’s refurbished lineup hasn’t escaped the hikes either.

As spotted in a Reddit thread and confirmed by navigating to PlayStation Direct itself, Sony has increased the price of its certified refurbished PS5 Slim models in the U.S. by $100. The refurbished PS5 Slim Digital Edition is now listed at $499, while the refurbished PS5 Slim with disc drive is now listed at $549 on PlayStation Direct.

What makes the change stand out even more is that Sony’s certified refurbished original PS5 is still listed at $399, meaning the older launch-era model is now a much cheaper entry point than either of the Slim refurb options.

That leaves things in a pretty strange spot. Refurbished consoles are usually where buyers go to save a bit of money, but with the Slim refurb models now sitting this high, some players may start wondering whether “certified refurbished” is even much of a deal anymore. This also comes just weeks after Sony’s latest price increase for new PS5 hardware.

Nah. Because:

A comparable PC costs more.

You can buy a used PS5 for considerably less than what Sony is selling them for.

A refurbished Series X directly from MS is the same price as a refurbished PS5 Slim w/ disc drive directly from Sony.

Switch 2 isn't a competing console. It's roughly 74 million units behind the PS5 and can't even play the majority of AAA games out there, and the ones it can are drastically gimped compared to PC, PS, and Xbox.

This price increase isn't hurting sales of the PS5 whatsoever or begging people to buy a PC or a competing console. It's only hurting the sales of second hand PS5's directly from Sony.

At the same time, they are pursuing a tariff refund from the US government with no indication as to whether they will return it to their customers who were the ones who paid for it.

What's even the point of doing this? all game companies suck and they all want our money there's no reason why we should still be playing console wars over the price of the consoles when Sony and Nintendo would charge as much as Microsoft is for the Series X if they knew they could get away with it

He got big mad over my thread about Sony's recent DRM fuckup and resorted to insults and even after Sony issued thier statement and i expressed skeptisism, he was upset that i didn't immediately admit that I was wrong and kept throwing more insults about how he was right and i wasn't, I kept telling him that just resorting to insults doesn't bring people to his side and even mocked his attitude to drive that home about it and he just kept flying off the handles, even more so with every laugh react I gave him.

And oh, I'm definitely shaking in my boots for the inevitable third dm about how he was right, i was wrong, and how I'm the one who's upset for laughing at him.:rofl2:

Well Nintendo is still there, albeit doing thier own thing that pisses people off in other ways, and Valve was seen as so much of a threat to Sony that they bailed on porting thier games to PC recently.

Because he HAS to be right and everyone else HAS to be wrong. The fact that everyone in a more publicized thread is shredding this guy's perpeually assblasted butt in the same way he claims I totally would have on any other fourm only adds to the laughs i've been getting from this guy, maybe he should quit GBATemp and go to Reddit or some other pro-Sony fourm if he wants a Sony-themed hugbox.
