Critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV set to launch on Switch 2 in August

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? Known far and wide for its expanded free trial which nowadays allows you to play through not just the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Heavensward expansion, but also the more recent Stormblood and Shadowbringers expansions up to level 80 for free with no restrictions on playtime? Sure you have! And I'm sure you'll be excited to hear the game is making the leap over to the Nintendo Switch 2 in August.

Those wanting to play will need to buy the game on the Switch 2, and subsequently maintain an active subscription for the title. The first month of play will be something of an early access period to ensure server stability, and during this time you'll be able to play without a subscription. It's not quite as simple as other console releases though, with existing players requiring a secondary subscription to play on the Switch 2. You do at least get 50% off if you have an active subscription on a different platform, but it won't be ideal if you're just somebody wanting to take your existing characters on the go. One small silver lining however is the fact that you won't need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Nah they are allowed to dislike it if they want i don't think most sane FFXIV players care. I like the game and have been playing since 2016 but one one thing that has always peeved me about it's community is that you're not allowed to have any criticism. Which is ironic considering the game is literally built upon criticism towards 1.0 hence the game being shitcanned and rebuilt.
I'm a bit newer having started in post endwalker but I've never shied away from lobbing criticism at them. if square wants me to keep my sub then they better put the effort in to make it worth it. still pissed about being punished for being a dynamis player during lunar stuff. too small of a dc to clear the progression missions and so we got left with large periods of time where red alerts and mech missions where blocked till we failed it enough times to get pushed forward out of pity
it's more so seeing people dumping on games that aren't for them(in terms of stuff like genre interest and so on) and saying it's a bad game because of it. kinda hard to say it's for sure the case here but it was just me seeing it for the millionth time and finally wanting to say something

I'm in a pickle with the free trial. I started it a long time ago on PC, using my SE account tied to my main email account. But I didn't get far, and hadn't gone back to it since. With a Sw2 version, I'm interested in playing it there. But my understanding is that the trial cannot be transferred to another platform.

Subscriptions for this game on consoles being so different dependent on the platform really show how different each platform handles things. Like on Xbox you need Xbox Live and.... to buy some ingame currency to pay for the subscription ingame. On Switch 2 it appears to be some separate subscription from all other platforms but doesnt require NSO. Playstation iirc is just 1 subscription.

As far as I can tell, yeah. It's not possible to play the trial version through multiple platforms using the same SE account. You'd have to either create a new free trial account, or purchase the Switch 2 version of FFXIV for your current SE account. Of course, once you purchase FFXIV on any one platform, you'll be locked into that platform unless you buy a different version to switch between platforms without losing progress.

By the way, this also includes any expansions beyond what's available in the trial/base version (up to Shadowbringer after 04/28). So if you decide to play the game up to Dawntrail on both PC and Switch 2, you'll need to make sure you have the base game + Endwalker/Dawntrail purchased for both platforms (this applies for all other versions as well).

I have a friend who paid for this shitty game online subscription for years (almost a decade), not long ago she couldn't pay it for a while and essentially lost everything, she totally lost her mind when that happened.

The funny thing is that 2 years before this happened she tried to convince me to invest my money in this game, I stopped playing it right after the trial ended.

Unless she completely lost the account (either by deleting it herself, or through termination due to violation of the ToS), it wouldn't be possible to lose everything after not paying for a time. I've went some periods without renewing my sub when money got tight, and everything was still there when I came back to the game later (on all of my characters, save for anything that was removed from the game entirely such as skills/spells that were retired or changed).

It'd be a lot different if she owned an estate prior to letting her subscription expire, though. If the owner of a private estate doesn't enter it within 45 days after they last entered, the house is demolished (the player is given warnings in-game and through email as early as 15/10/3 days prior to this), and the owner will then have 35 days to reclaim any housing items that were in the estate (and, iirc, 80% of the gil used to pay for the estate grounds). If the items (and gil) are not claimed within that time, the items (and gil) are then deleted with no means to recover them.

So if she did have an estate and went unsubbed long enough that she lost both the estate and everything inside of it, 1) I understand her frustration over losing years of work decorating one's own virtual living space, but 2) it was 100% her own fault for not planning for that eventuality and moving what she could into retainer storage before her sub ended.

FF XIV reboot (not the 1.0) launched on windows/PS3

it's been on sony consoles since the beginning
And they only did PS3 as an obligation since it was in the initial 1.0 announcement.
And it was rough. 15 to 20 fps was the norm unless you were wandering around with alone. And they had to cut a lot of the design decisions from 1.0 such as no loading screens and larger cities just to get it to run.

I do find it funny the same day they announce they will be sunsetting the PS4 version in about 2 years they announce the switch 2 version of ffxiv. Sucks nintendo not allowing the universal sub fee the other platforms get though. Was looking forward to abusing the fact you can sell items on the steam marketplace to pay for a XIV sub for the switch 2 version,

On the topic of performance though. Given how a steam deck can run 14 at low settings 800p at 40-60fps.
Switch 2 should be capable of 60fps. Heres hoping SE also leave the framerate unlocked like they do on xbox and ps4 and ps5 allowing for the 120hz mode.

But the people here aren’t criticising the game, they’re just doing the usual of saying ‘I do not care’ like anybody asked.

YoshiP you Sly Fox.
I already have a Switch2 sooooo.

This is very bad for my timemanagment

I think folks blaming Nintendo for this are probably looking in the wrong direction. Square Enix has spent many years milking their franchises with re-releases, ports and the like. Final Fantasy more than others. I would be extremely surprised if this wasn’t their decision! If anything, I bet they wish they did this from the start with the console ports.
Did someone say "Integrum MastErPiece" .?

Aside YoshiP there isn't much left to SqUareniX ..
I doubt they'll recover .

But this game I take gladly.
----

Buy game and then pay for sub is bad..
But this game is in active development..
Nothing exciting releasing this year anymore eitherhow

This is correct. I platinumed the (PS4) version of the game during a period where my PS+ lapsed. Just needed the subscription for the actual game. Which honestly isn't even necessary until you get everything you want out of the very extensive free trial.

I'm actually surprised that NSO isn't required. What black magic did Yoshi-P use to pull that off?

(For those who don't know, Yoshi-P is a Black Mage main and is very good at it.)
As far as I know, pretty much every game that uses an external subscription or is free to play doesn't need NSO on the Switch or Switch 2. I'm sure somebody will point out exceptions, but off the top of my head, Pokemon Champions, Warframe, Fortnite, and Overwatch all don't.

No, they specifically said during the FanFest's keynote that they had to negotiate a lot with Nintendo and that was the best agreement they could reach, so it's absolutely on them.

The thing is, by my calculations, if they had required the NSO Expansion tier instead of doing this separate subscription at 50% off for existing players, it would have actually been cheaper. The only ones that benefit from this deal are those who would only play on Sw2, while having no NSO sub at all. Personally, that seems like a far smaller group.

So uh... a little hack/trick if you're using Gmail... Google does not consider a period to be a character in an email address, but SQEnix does... do with what info what you will if you want to make a second account and still have the email/verification/etc. come to your main email account :D
