The Neo Geo AES+ is a modern take on classic hardware with no emulation in the picture

The early 1990s were some of the greatest moments of innovations and games in video game history. Ever since the video game crash of 1983 and the release of the NES, video games started to reformulate into something that everyone can enjoy. In the arcades however? They were still booming with their cutting edge technology. Around the turn of the decade, SNK changed the game with the Neo Geo MVS and AES, arguably delivering some of the most authentic arcade experiences ever brought to the living room. Despite a premium MSRP of around $649 for the console and around $200 per game, the AES delivered on its promise, allowing fans to play the exact same MVS arcade software at home without compromise.

Fast forward to 2026, and with a collaboration project with PLAION Replai, a new system geared towards improving this system furthermore is born under the name Neo Geo AES+, a system that is a 1:1 hardware recreation of the original AES. No emulation or FPGA resources were used in the making of this, and it's set to launch on November 12th of 2026 with a price of $249.99. A special white Anniversary Edition will also be available for those willing to pay an additional $100, with you at least getting a Metal Slug cartridge for that price too. Rounding out the lineup is the Ultimate Edition, which includes the full launch lineup along with additional accessories, coming in at $999.99.

The system is set to launch alongside ten games:
  • Metal Slug
  • The King of Fighters 2002
  • Garou: Mark of the Wolves
  • Big Tournament Golf
  • Shock Troopers
  • Samurai Shodown V Special
  • Pulstar
  • Twinkle Star Sprites
  • Magician Lord
  • Over Top
Individual cartridges will be priced around $70 with more titles planned post-launch.

As a MiSTer owner, I'm already satisfied.
But then again, while the games look stunning, I don't have nostalgia for the NG as I didn't have one as a kid.
Glad though for those who had to have more options now.

To anyone saying 80 USD per game is expensive, here's current pricecharting prices for the ten launch games:

Metal Slug - $3,208.60
Big Tournament Golf - $2,220.50
Garou: Mark of the Wolves - $2,148.09
Twinkle Star Sprites - $594.33
Pulstar - $1,992.58
King of Fighters 2002 - $555.18
Shock Troopers - $74.99
Over Top - $224.76
Magician Lord - $249.38
Samurai Shodown V Special - $2,331.25

Surprisingly Shock Troopers is cheaper when you buy it as a loose cart. Some of the others are ridiculously expensive. If these games indeed play on an original system, are officially licensed and don't take 3.3V/5V shortcuts like some early flash carts that potentially damage consoles, then these games are absolute steals at 80 USD.

That's the price of the used market and what people are willing to pay. I personally would never spend $2k on a game. lol

I remember having the good old sega arcade controllers for the megadrive and playing Streets of Rage and Golden Axe with my brothers.

Classic gaming back then.

How the fuck we managed 4 player split screen back then and its a shame we dont get it anymore.

Todays kids idea of playing games with your mates is isolated in your bedroom playing online.

And size of tvs today, 1 1/4 screen would still be bigger than what we had back then.
i used to have birthday parties that were sleep overs where we would move tvs from multiple different rooms into one room and my friends would bring over their consoles and we would have gaming competitions. as a grown up all my friends still cherish those moments with me and it built a lifetime bond with friends.

playing online where ur just talking with someone via a headset isnt doing that. kids dont even know how to make true friends and build those bonding type of memories in the gamingsphere anymore.

i dont come from a rich background either. when sega dreamcast came out my friend got one and we all went to his house and played it with him. i wanted one but i never could afford it until i got older and bought one. i didnt look down upon my friend or see him in a bad light because he had something i didnt. we shared. kids dont do that anymore. there isnt the sharing mentality because the gaming industry has microtransactioned things into the haves and have nots in anything that is multiplayer.

if you get prestige status in COD or whatever they call it your in a different class than your other friends that dont have that status. the gaming industry doesnt build things for entertainment, parity, or even friendship building. its all about $$ now.

 Cod (call of duty) is a pretty good game with the pets communication system its kind of the best game i ever played. (not excepting my nintendo 3Ds and my wii).

Just get an Optiplex, those 8bitdo Neo Geo controllers and load it up with Batocera. Will cost you less and give you more bang for your buck.

I do love the Neo Geo lineup but those prices whilst I can afford, I cannot justify.

Imagine paying over $5 for this...

Even this new console is already hilariously overpriced for what it is.
I feel it's an extremely stupid way to waste money.
Then again, people use their money on even more useless stuff, so, yeah...

Oh well, I at least hope they enjoy it for what it is.

The console should be $50-100, and games $10-20 at most.

I think this is really cool. I saw a YouTube video about it and thought for sure someone just made a nice shell for an emulator... Hoping it was FPGA. But real components is cool. Seems fairly priced. I'm not getting it though.

I hope it's gonna do well because I'd like to see other systems reborn... Like a Famicom but with a better color scheme; probably the best looking console ever made, but going with that maroon color... That was a bad choice. Turquoise, Green, Blue, Purple... Probably any color would have been better, also no gold plates on the controllers, and cord coming out on the top of the controller and you have a console even more beautiful than the white Sega Saturn.

It's not the games, it's manufacturing costs.
Neo Geo cartridges are huge circuit boards with an abundance of chips.

I know the reason for the price, what I don't get is the motivation for reviving obsolete tech and even paying a premium for it.

There is no reason to use vacuum tube computers in 2026 either, which is why they don't exist anymore, despite being more expensive.

IMHO, the only consumer grade gaming device (so far, that I know of) that would have a reason to be "revived" would unironically be the 3DS, since dual screens are scarce and 3D screens are still a rarity, thus, they offer an unique experience.

Even the full Wii/Wii U experience is easy to emulate on regular PCs now, but not Super Mario 3D Land.

Back in the 90s Neogeo was the most expensive console and the games were also extremely expensive, I think it still holds the record for being the most expensive even today. They were able to justified the price because the console was the same as their arcade machine, it's not dumbed down. Ultimately, it's NeoRage the emulator that killed Neogeo in the late 90s.

I can see why they are going with this authentic console route. The kids who lusted for Neogeo are now in their 40s with disposable income, this gives them a second chance to own the real thing.

This isnt "Real components" either. My understanding is that these are recreated components or "ASIC" chips based on the MisterFPGA core.
So think of it like how a FPGA chip can be updated and reconfigured, these ASIC chips are sort of permanently configured a certain way and cant be altered once made.
Which would be fine if these chips were perfectly replicating the original chips inside the real Neo Geo. But instead the chips are based on the Neo Geo Mister core. And people who use a MisterFPGA know that cores arent perfect and get updates. So this new product will most likely be stuck in its current state and never improve, unlike say Analogue's products like the Pocket or the Analogue 3D, that use a FPGA which recieves updates to improve accuracy or add features.

So in other words, this isnt a hardware clone of the original Neo Geo. This is sort of a hardware clone of a hardware emulator (misterfpga) of a Neo Geo.

I love Neo Geo but this is a shitty trend. Just rereleasing old hardware as new and asking full price like 20 years ago? Seriously? I mean I like that the still have love for the system but I am sure it doesn't even have true RGB just shitty HDMI...
edit: On their website is a video, while it is pretty much rendered and wonder what those 4:3 screens are supposed to be ( I know there are modern 4:3 arcade screens but still..) and in one scene you see the back, looks like it has both old and new output at least, but I could be wrong.
