The Neo Geo AES+ is a modern take on classic hardware with no emulation in the picture

The early 1990s were some of the greatest moments of innovations and games in video game history. Ever since the video game crash of 1983 and the release of the NES, video games started to reformulate into something that everyone can enjoy. In the arcades however? They were still booming with their cutting edge technology. Around the turn of the decade, SNK changed the game with the Neo Geo MVS and AES, arguably delivering some of the most authentic arcade experiences ever brought to the living room. Despite a premium MSRP of around $649 for the console and around $200 per game, the AES delivered on its promise, allowing fans to play the exact same MVS arcade software at home without compromise.

Fast forward to 2026, and with a collaboration project with PLAION Replai, a new system geared towards improving this system furthermore is born under the name Neo Geo AES+, a system that is a 1:1 hardware recreation of the original AES. No emulation or FPGA resources were used in the making of this, and it's set to launch on November 12th of 2026 with a price of $249.99. A special white Anniversary Edition will also be available for those willing to pay an additional $100, with you at least getting a Metal Slug cartridge for that price too. Rounding out the lineup is the Ultimate Edition, which includes the full launch lineup along with additional accessories, coming in at $999.99.

The system is set to launch alongside ten games:
  • Metal Slug
  • The King of Fighters 2002
  • Garou: Mark of the Wolves
  • Big Tournament Golf
  • Shock Troopers
  • Samurai Shodown V Special
  • Pulstar
  • Twinkle Star Sprites
  • Magician Lord
  • Over Top
Individual cartridges will be priced around $70 with more titles planned post-launch.

That's a very unusual and much appreciated modern take on classic hardware, I love to see it!

As for the price tag, wasn't Neo Geo unobtainium even back when it released? $250 is a far cry from that, but the Ultimate Edition's price tag is definitely an authentic touch

Sorry SNK, but why don't you just release the console with the full archive? you won't need more than 4 GB memory.

Thus, we can buy the console and play all our childhood gems, all legally.

For me: KOF 97, 98 and 99 are a must. That's my most vivid memories of NEOGEO

For those of you incessantly whining about the price of Mario Kart World, the Switch 2, and the PS5, that's $1581 in today's money for the console and $486 per game! So a Switch 2 with MK World bundle is about 1/4th the price of a 1990 Neo Geo with one game. Please learn to adjust prices for inflation before making an idiot of yourself when discussing the current prices of games and consoles vs back in the day.

Nobody cares bro. NeoGeo was/is considered astronomically expensive even back then. Same reason why nobody bought a 3DO.

I have a friend that's already putting his own original Neo Geo up for sale to replace it with this one. Same hardware with HDMI and regular AV out? It's a no-brainer upgrade.

Really wondering how the new games which can work on original hardware will affect the original game market. They're basically like reproductions, but they're still the exact same game which plays on the same hardware.

The price of the console is great.. but... $70 a game?? :rofl2:
Post automatically merged:

Oh, and for those unaware: the Saudi royals own SNK now.
Easiest pass in my life... Would have bought the console and a game, cuz that's what I do... But I forgot about this.

I'd love to see a new re-release of a Mini Classic Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, and Nintendo 64, but it probably won't happen.

There's always free emulators and these would be emulator boxes, though they'd be nice to have as they'd be official products.
Oh, and for those unaware: the Saudi royals own SNK now. Minimizing the profit margin here wouldn't exactly have bankrupted them.
If we as customers knew who the owners are of the brands/organizations and what they do we'd certainly vote with our wallets.

I stopped going to McDonald's, not because of who they support, but the damn Big Macs are now like Medium Macs. 😑

I guess HDMI output could be a nice touch, nothing is said about crt filters or upscaling or etc.. I wonder if they plan to release the entire library ? Die hard fans have probably all already acquired what was necessary to play NEO GEO at home by now.. I personally have a MVS board in my arcade with a flashcart that has all the games. The cart was pretty expensive, but certain titles on MVS were already quite high, making the flashcart the smartest move. I can't say I play much NEO GEO these days.. I doubt many games actually justify such a high price tag.

To put it simply, it failed hard due to how poor the emulation was; they cheapened the cost to build it by using a low-cost processor, and released games on SD cards with the pins swapped so it wasn't as easy to put any random SD card in without modifying an adapter (which is what people did to load it with emulators). Tommo also violated the Final Burn Alpha license by not asking for permission to use it, and the license states that you cannot sell the emulator for profit.
If they were just using Final Burn Alpha, then is Final Burn Alpha's emulation quality somehow not acceptable..?

LMFAO for 2020-6 especially. Literally everything and then some is up on myabandonware and your choice of torrent repo.

Mental purists will always argue for CRT TV setup and version 1 stuff on original system. Charging a pre-built gaming PC price for, this, is just hilarity for a system that was the odd duck even back in its day.

cool to see things like this over just emulation sometimes

I remember having the good old sega arcade controllers for the megadrive and playing Streets of Rage and Golden Axe with my brothers.

Classic gaming back then.

How the fuck we managed 4 player split screen back then and its a shame we dont get it anymore.

Todays kids idea of playing games with your mates is isolated in your bedroom playing online.

And size of tvs today, 1 1/4 screen would still be bigger than what we had back then.
