Atmosphere v1.11.0 released, adds support for Switch firmware 22.0.0

The wait is over! 18 days after the release of Switch firmware 22.0.0, the latest version of Atmosphere is available to download. This update brings support for the latest Switch firmware, with special thanks given to alula for handling a lot of the heavy lifting around the kernel, loader, and erpt changes. This update doesn't come without some downsides however, with changes to how applications and applets' lifespans are managed apparently breaking the homebrew ecosystem. You can read more about this below:

Changelog said:
Please note: A change in how applications/applets' lifespan is managed broke the homebrew ecosystem.
  • All applications and applets are expected to perform a clean exit by calling the relevant IPC commands.
  • Homebrew compiled with libnx and hbmenu itself explicitly avoid exiting so it can keep using the same process.
    • Properly fixing this would require a re-design of how homebrew is launched and terminated.
  • As a temporary solution, patches to the am sysmodule are now included which allow restoring the previous behavior and regain homebrew compatibility without any further changes.
  • Nonetheless, please report any issues you may face when testing homebrew to ensure no edge cases have been missed.

Though a temporary solution has been implemented, users should be aware and report any issues that arise from previously-working homebrew.

Atmpshere v1.11.0 is available now directly from the project's GitHub repo.

As Switch games releases will eventually slow to a trickle in the coming years (or months?), the need to update to the newest firmware will also become irrelevant, probably. We're lucky SciresM's retirement came so late in Switch's life. I still appreciate the efforts of the devs for this new Atmosphere release.

It can be counted like June the 15th?
Definitely! While I'm thankful for the new devs picking up where SciresM left, we mustn't forget who made it in a first place. :D Happy June 15th!

Indeed. Most of the games that are worth our time are already on Switch, maybe a couple more will come out as Switch 1 is slowly getting overtaken by the Switch 2.

It's not the games you need to worry about, it's the updates for the games. Hollow Knight: Silksong new update requires 22.0.0 so unless you patch that to work on older firmware or install via an installer that can patch cmnt during install then you need to update to play those.

And you don't really have to be on the latest update either, unless it fixes some game breaking bug or has something new in-game that you can make use of. Still, it's good to have options. ^^

Some new dlc's requires the update to be able to play though. Little Nightmares update also needs 22.0.0 and some older games don't work on new firmwares without an update. Then there's the new compressed headers in some games like Super Mario Bros. Wonder - this is supposed for min firmware 21.2.0, that's new and needed new firmware to unpack them. Still it's good to have options. Thanks to the AtmosphereNX dev team & Hekate team.
