Earlier today Sony announced new price increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player, with the updated recommended retail prices set to take effect on April 2, 2026. In its announcement, Sony said the decision was made because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:
  • PS5 – $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
  • PS5 Pro – $899.99
  • PlayStation Portal – $249.99
Sony also listed updated prices for the U.K., Europe, and Japan, while noting that other territories should check with local retailers or direct.playstation.com where available.

This isn't the first time that Sony has increased the price of the PS5 since launch, nor is it the second time. GBAtemp has reported on Sony's previous price increase from April, 2025 as well as the price increase from August, 2025.

As a reminder, the PS5 originally launched in November 2020 at a recommended U.S. retail price of $499.99 for the disc version and $399.99 for the digital version.

RIP Sony in Latam. No wonder many people moved to PC gaming, not to play new AAA hardware demanding games, but to play retro stuff, Indies and F2P games.

And people still wonder why mobile gaming is stronger than ever. Because it's way cheaper.

Iran war Trump started? Reportedly, this increasing the cost significantly on a number of goods due to shipping issues resulting from this new conflict. Wouldn't be surprised if this was the final push for Sony. In addition to Trump tariffs, and the unregulated AI boom (which the current administration is also doing nothing about)
People using the hell out of AI for everything has a cost, there's so many YouTube videos which are clearly AI yet people just go along with it somehow.

I just can't stand AI videos they either look too plasticky and fake, or sound very robotic. I know eventually AI will sound no different than any other human, it's just a matter of time.

This song was made used AI and most probably can't tell:

I'll be honest, I really like it.

Remember when the first playstation came out and it suceeded before it was 100 bux cheaper than the Saturn and that was the whole presentation for its launch too . . .
Yeah, times have changed coz now they increase price for existing hardware . . . GG.
The PS3 was the last console i ever bought (i did get a Wii U for free though) and nowadays i only play on PC coz consoles are dead to me.

Well once again AI slop makes everything more expensive .

I hope people are enjoying their AI slop videos :X .

Also i bet Sony is just increasing the price because they have no competition. MS pretty much murdered the Xbox brand and Nintendo is not playing by the same rules.

This is more because of RAM and storage prices. Also their reluctance to subsidize the hardware pretty much anymore. Despite the fact it's beneficial for them to do so (because they own the only storefront and take 30%). I really can't imagine that a significant amount of people are buying PS5s at these prices and only downloading free2play games. Because that would be the only reason not to subsidize them. Except greed.

Most expensive console ever
Not. Even. Close.

The Panasonic 3DO launched at $699 in 1993, which is $1570 adjusted for inflation. The Neo Geo launched at $650 in 1990, which is about $1625 today. Those are not the only consoles of the past that cost more than a April 2026 PS5 Pro costs. If the Steam Machine ever actually launches, it likely will cost more too. Not only that, but many games of the 90s -- and even 80s -- cost more than Mario Kart World. Don't worry. I'm more than happy to keep correcting you all and putting prices in perspective.

Damn, $400 for a console without a disc drive.

I still remember when everyone hated the PSP Go.

I mean, is it any wonder those systems found very little success relative to Nintendo/Sega consoles? Wages haven't even remotely kept up with inflation, so price inflation continues to outpace.

I think it'll be less than $900, but maybe not a lot less.

That's why there was a rental place around every corner. People didn't commit to buying games near as much until the Gamecube/PS2 era when you could get 'greatest hits' titles for like $20 each.

Well, TurboQuant might help drop the prices of ram.
I don't think that will drive the prices down, on the contrary could have the opposite effect where they become more hungry because it's a bottomless pit. It's the same concept as greed, one never becomes satisfied with what they have when there's opportunities for more.

AI slop fuckin' sucks i swear. I'm not even a Sony fan anymore and this hurts to read. Just disappointment all around.
There's something for that: it's called enshittification. I don't think the prices will drop any time soon, it's going to go up even worst following SSD shortages.

Remember "The Gadget Show" on Channel 5? I remember them shilling the Go back in the day, acting like DD didn't exist on the regular UMD equipped consoles with the more affordable storage options.

I never expected much from the show but that was bad by even their standards.

I read something the other where the author said cheaper to run AI models just made everyone want to run more AI rather than do more with less.

If you factor inflation sure that makes sense. But in terms of actual dollar amount, has anything been this much. Maybe I am forgetting something but I don’t see $900 capturing a lot of new buyers granted that’s the cost of the pro not the base model. For something that has been $300 base with a disc drive at Target these jumps are a lot.

I’m curious what hardware sales will look like after the increase.
