FR/LG LayeredFS ROM Replacement Guide

Hello everyone!

Long time lurker, first time poster here. After a night of messing around with the new FR/LG I was able to successfully load a ROM Hack in place of the default FR/LG games.

To anyone interested in doing so, the only limitation I have noticed so far is that RTC is not available (hacks like Pokemon Unknown need it for DNS), and possibly save block issues but I have otherwise not run into any problems so far!

You will still need to source your ROM, but using the following file structure will make it possible to play pretty much any Fire Red ROM hack (or Leaf Green by extension - Fire Red based hacks are playable on Leaf Green, and vice versa)

Fire Red
atmosphere/
└── contents/
└── 0100554023408000/
└── romfs/
└── Your patched ROM (Make sure to rename it to "FireRed_e.gba"!)

Leaf Green
atmosphere/
└── contents/
└── 010034AD02340000/
└── romfs/
└── Your patched ROM (Make sure to rename it to "LeafGreen_e.gba"!)

If all files are placed correctly, you should be able to launch the patched game to play the hack of your choice! Have fun!

DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for any lost save data. Please back up your saves beforehand. This has also only been tested on the English versions of both games, but should work for other languages so long as the correct titleid is given when setting up your files in the "/atmosphere/contents" directory

I have tried Fire REd Plus but it doesn't save or loading a save file from the original game is messed up.

What Fire Red hacks version is compatible or just basic quality life improvement rom hacks?

I have tried Unknown, save a game , then when I tried loading a save file it says: The save file has been deleted...

It does appear that basic QOL hacks are really the only ones we can play at the moment. Pretty much, if the rom is bigger than 16mb expect issues. I was able to save Unknown though.

Got Ruby and Emerald (both vanilla) working, but they don't save. Also, multiplayer (battle or trade) doesn't work.

I hope saves and multiplayer can be solved. I been playing ROM hacks on Retroarch's GBA core, which runs well and good, but doesn't support multiplayer. I don't know if the Switch has any multiplayer-capable GBA emulators, so hijacking this one seems like the best bet to me.

I also have all games from all regions extracted to a proper gba file.
Testet with:
mGBA - Only works with bios disabled and save states. InGame save .sav doesn't work at all.
EZ-Flash Omega: Default clean boot and NOR mode. Both stuck on a white screen as soon as you lauch the games.
I have the gboperator as well but not a single GBA flashcart to test the roms but I don't think it will work.

Strangely enough it's possible to open an old (InGame save) .sav from version 1.0 or 1.1 with the new switch rom but you still have to use save states for further progress. Feels like an AP measure to prevent gaming on emulators and actual hardware.
Would be interesting to see if someone has a save file before E4 so you can beat them and receive the legal event tickets.

gpSP retroarch core works on Switch, it works great with netplay

the gpsp core supports wireless adapter and link cable just need 2 devices in a netplay lobby and u need to set the options in core options.

hmmm, maybe its possible through reverse engineering the switch rom to see what changes have been made vs an original rom, and then maybe applying those changes to an R/S/E rom to get the multiplayer working?

Injecting GBA roms into GBA NSO works with all link cable multiplayer stuff besides wireless adaptor which only a few GBA games use if I'm remembering correctly like FireRed and LeafGreen for a few things but you can still trade and battle with regular link cable support so NSO injects will be fine.

Hey guys,

For anyone running into the Hoenn save bug with this setup (game runs fine but no Continue after reboot — saves just disappear), I spent the last couple of weeks reverse engineering the wrapper and got it working. Posted the full thing in a separate thread: https://gbatemp.net/threads/switch-...erald-save-fix-rom-replacement-v1-wip.681473/

Quick summary: single IPS patch for Atmosphère, drop the included zip on your SD card and Hoenn saves persist. Small caveat — wait ~7-8 sec after pressing Save before leaving the game. Tested on USA Leaf Green NSP with Emerald (USA + Europe). Should also work on Ruby/Sapphire.

Repo with the writeup, source, demo video, and download: https://github.com/GMR7Z-RE/leafgreen-hoenn-save

Hope it helps anyone who hit the same wall.

Cheers
