A controller for your thoughts - win a free controller!

conbanner.jpg

It's around that time of the year I try to be a more productive person, and with that comes the question of where that productivity should be directed. Courtesy of @AKNES I have a controller to give away, with the winner being able to pick from 8BitDo's Ultimate 2C (Bluetooth or Wireless), GuliKit's ES Pro, Elves 2, or Elves 2 Pro, or EasySMX's D05. On top of this, the administration have also decided to give three lucky runner ups a year of GBAtemp patronage, complete with ad-free perks! So what am I asking of you for a chance to win any of these lovely things?

The criteria is simple. You'll need to have been a member before this thread went live. If you're reading this as a lurker, I encourage you to sign up and join in with the larger community. You might not be able to join this giveaway, but there'll be more down the line. For those already here though, you'll just need to reply to this thread, and your reply will need the following information:
  • An upcoming game you're looking forward to
  • Your favourite ROM hack
  • A cool bit of gaming tech you own or are interested in
If you can manage that much, you'll have your shot at the prizes! It might all seem a bit random, but it's handy to check in every so often to see where interests currently lie. If we see there's big interest in a given game, we might go more out of our way to post smaller updates or trailers as they release. If a ROM hack has a bunch of recommendations, we might take a bit of time to feature or review it. It's all good to know.

You'll have a week to enter, with entries closing Friday the 27th of March at 8pm in the UK. I'll pop a threadmark down to make it clear where the cut-off is, and announce the winners on Sunday the 29th of March. All winners will be both tagged and DM'd, so feel free to turn off notifications for this post after putting your reply down.

A big thanks to @AKNES for supplying the choice of controller for giveaway. If you're interested in joining their Discord community where they run their own giveaways alongside providing customer support for the various things they sell, you can find a link below.

1) An upcoming game you're looking forward to?
Brigandine ABYSS! Big fan of the PS1 original since childhood. It's what got me into SRPGs. Hopefully it would just be as good.

2) Favourite ROM hack?
Still the a Brigandine game! Brigandine: Grand Edition (Cross MOD) for the win! After my brother broke my PS1, I found this hack years after and it basically rekindled my love for the game, more challenging, and more fun. A solid community find when I was just getting into the fan translation and rom hacking scene.

3) Cool gaming tech you own or are interested in?
My MSI Claw 8AI+. I have no other console or desktop PC right now, but this handheld's been a beast, AAA, indies, emulation, and even video editing, all of it in palm of my hands. Best piece of gaming hardware since the New 3DS I had back in 2018.

Hey! Super stoked that you're doing this! I tend to lurk, but thank you for keeping the community engaged!

An upcoming game you're looking forward to:
Sort of a weird pick here, but Pokemon Champions. I love Pokemon VGC from a spectator perspective, but I haven't really played it myself for quite a while. I'm excited to see a) a more standardized platform for VGC play, and b) cross play with Android/iOS. I think it's a really healthy move that will help make VGC more accessible to newcomers.

Your favourite ROM hack:
SSBM 20XX. I don't play a ton of Melee, but 20XX just improves on the base platform in so many ways. It tends to be what I boot up in lieu of stock GALE01, even if I'm just dunking on bots for a bit. Bonus points for being playable on hardware!

A cool bit of gaming tech you own or are interested in:
I don't actually own that much gaming-specific tech of note. A lot of my personal tech is sort of peripheral support for the hobby, e.g. homelab stuff, networking, file hosting, etc. That being said, I've been considering setting myself up with a dedicated relay server (or possibly Proxmox container with hardware passthrough) for MattKC's Vanilla project. I'm interested in seeing how feasible it is to interface with real Wii U hardware over high-latency connections, e.g. SSH or Wireguard tunnels. Basically, I'm trying to find out whether I can effectively turn my Wii U into a server for thin client gaming. It's been languishing on my entertainment center (powered, fortunately, to keep the NAND healthy) for far too long now.

1. Is Bubsy 4 out yet? If so then next game is probably rhythm heaven groove

2.SMW Logic or Mario’s Mystery Meat; any decent SMW hack is good though

3. I don’t really have anything “interesting”, at least not anymore. I used to have some arcade machines and an official Nintendo GBA screen lens replacement kit, among other oddities. Right now I’m looking to get one of those sharp Super Famicom TVs :)

  • An upcoming game you're looking forward to:

Am I Nima. It's a fascinating sort of puzzle visual novel about a girl who seems to have amnesia and a mother convinced you're not her daughter (and you might not be)

  • Your favorite ROM hack:

Most people would probably pick a pokemon rom hack or something but I'm gonna have to go with the colorization hack of mario land 2. Basic pick but its legit good.

  • A cool bit of gaming tech you own or are interested in:

Another basic choice, but the steam controller. I am so pissed that the ram shortage is delaying the steam box and vr cause valve is holding back from releasing the controller until those are ready. Its so stupid. GIMME THE STEAM CONTROLLER, VALVE! I CAN PAY FOR IT! I DON'T WANT THE OTHER STUFF!

Well the game I am looking forward to the most this year is Trails in the Sky 2nd. I've been an avid fan since about 2020 and not only do I get to relive these games but my wife is joining me for the ride and were both really excited for Sky 2nd after having played the 1st.

I cool piece of gaming tech I use to own was a beast link gate for Mega Man Battle Network 6 which allowed you to use physical battle chips with the game. I, unfortunately, had to sale it a few years back but I still have some of the battle chips and I will own one again. Mark my words!

To follow up with my love for Battle Network (Happy 25th btw) one of my favorite rom hacks is the dab patch for Battle Network 6 that allows Mega Man to hit a dab at nearly any point in the game (cutscene and battles included) by pressing select. It very silly and makes me laugh but honorable mention to the Banjo Kazooie mod that has you explore Zelda words. I really enjoyed that one.

Hey, thanks for hosting the giveaway and making it easy to participate, here's my answers:

An upcoming game you're looking forward to:
mega man dual override being announced sounds fire, I know some people have been waiting for one for years, and while I don't buy many games early nowadays it'd be the one i'd look out for because I enjoyed some of the earlier megaman games when I was a kid.

Your favorite ROM hack:
I really enjoyed Newer Super Mario Bros Wii; While I haven't played a lot of romhacks this was one that caught my attention years ago when I had a working wii. It's very fleshed out, feels akin to the base game's style despite having a lot of unique features, and it was a game I got to 100% with my sister, so that alone makes it feel special to me.

A cool bit of gaming tech you own or are interested in:
I picked up a GB interceptor off of aliexpress a while ago that is based on the works of this creator, and it's been fun to stream a few of the gameboy games my mother passed down to me over a decade ago. I even got to backup pictures from my gameboy camera. :D

Best of luck to everyone in the giveaway!

Mmmmmm and upcoming game, I am in doubt for that, but could be Pokemon Wind and Waves. Regarding rom hacks, I don't know if a translation would fit, but the Yakuza Black Panther english patch must be my favourite as it allowed me to play the game, and if not, the Drill Dozer Coloring hack would be my pick. Regarding a cool piece of tech, I am guessing I still crave to for a VR headset.

A game i'm looking forward to?
Fate of the old republic... Even with as much as i don't trust EA not to ruin it or make it impossible to enjoy. Cynically, i would sooner believe the people in the files would start serving their due sentences before i can trust EA to make anything good again. 😞

Favorite romhack? Easy. Rockman 4 Minus Infinity. It's the only thing that warranted me picking up a repro cart; in no small part because i just cant get an nes flash cart at all, let alone one that can load it.

Gaming tech I'm interested in? That depends.
In terms of retro pc stuff, id like to get the gear to liquid cool a couple of my builds. For my lga775 based win98 machine, I would just need a couple 240 rads, fans, cpu and gpu blocks. For the xp based system i have in mind, it would then be some rads, a pump res unit, and a liquid cooled gpu.

Console wise? I guess a Switch 2 by default, once jailbroken. I still want a series x over a ps5 because backwards compatibility.

Upcoming game: Light No Fire by Hello Games. No Man's Sky was a fascinating concept for a game that I put around 20 hours into. I also appreciate how much work they have put into making that game special over the past decade. I think something that had a bigger focus on multiplayer from the start would really make the game better because multiplayer (at least crossplay because that is what I have tried) is not acceptable in No Man's Sky if you want to play co-op with someone.

Favorite ROM hack: Honestly not really into ROM hacking, so I guess my favorite hack is The Disaster of Brainrot 2: Walter's White Wet Wild Adventure. It is a random Super Mario 64 hack that I saw online that looked funny.

Cool bit of gaming tech you own/are interested in: The PC emulation scene on Android is improving a bunch, and it is pretty cool to see people being able to use the tech they already own in more ways, especially with rising PC prices and lack of availability of certain parts. It makes me want to move to Android even more than I already do know.

I'll give this a shot! Can never have too many good options for controllers

Upcoming game I'm looking forward to:
Alabaster Dawn. I really loved CrossCode, and the demo for Alabaster Dawn feels incredible to play.

Favorite ROM hack:
Project Base for Super Metroid. I've especially enjoyed hacks that use its modified physics to make entire new maps to play in, but Project Base is extremely fun on its own merits. Most rom hacks I play tend to be of Super Metroid. I recommend X-Fusion's latest version, too!

Cool gaming tech:
I'm looking forward to the Steam Frame, and as far as what I'd likely be able to afford for the time being, the Steam Controller. I own a Steam Deck, and the first thing that I thought once I got to hold it was that there needed to be a separate controller of it, because of how surprisingly comfortable and versatile it is.

Favorite rom hack: Thinking about it, I never gave much attention to these like to actually play ... well I've been playing Dr Mario DX(Gb, colorized hack) quite a while nowadays!
Cool bit of gaming tech: hmm I have a "telejogo"..? ahha absically a Brazilian version of pong, just like that (not my pic):
