PlayStation Portal gets 1080p "High Quality" mode, offers higher bitrate for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming

The PlayStation Portal felt like a bit of a confused device when it launched. Supporting only Remote Play and requiring a PS5 console to be able to use it, it stood as a £200 accessory that appealed to a niche within a niche. Despite that though, it sold surprisingly well, with almost two million sales within its first year on the market. It took two years for Sony to address the elephant in the room and finally bring their Cloud Streaming to the platform, making it into something of a viable alternative to a PS5 console for some. And that experience is just getting better.

From today, PlayStation Portal owners can make use of a higher bitrate mode when streaming in 1080p. Dubbed "1080p High Quality", this mode is available for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming, offering better image quality at the cost of higher data usage. Those interested for trying it for themselves can enable it by going to the Quick Menu, and browsing the Max Resolution options after updating their system.

and it's still a waste of money
I think the best use case I've seen for it is for a family that already owns a PS5 and has a library of digital games. Like if you're already subscribing to PS+ anyway and already have that backlog, it's a decent screen with familiar controls that can be picked up for as little as £100 on eBay.

There's maybe something there too for those who don't want to buy a PS5 console and see this as the more accessible route, though that probably is the true niche within a niche.

The only issue with that is, even with this update it’s damn near unplayable with the random qualifying drops and hella input lag

I don’t even have a slow network either

Yeah, I see some value in the device. It's not something I'd personally ever get, but I don't agree with the thought that it's inherently a waste of money. Depending on one's needs, it may get great use.

Man, such a waste of potential this handheld is.

I guess you can use it to play the PSP emulator (if hacked), but so can most phones these days.

It's the Wii U GamePad of PS5.

nope you need a ps5. its ONLY use is for streaming games from your ps5 if someone is using the tv etc. so you get to play your games on a shitty smaller screen and at much inferior resolutions! you can't even leave the house with it since it needs to connect to the same connection as the ps5
Everything you just wrote is wrong.

As someone who still adores the Wii U as one of the best consoles of all time (especially if you hack it out, but even if you don't), this is why I can see the value in the device for the right people. Shame Sony doesn't lean into that nature more though and cater optional asymmetrical gameplay to the PS5 and Portal for key gaming experiences.

that's EXACTLY how it works
Bro read the first post, it explains how Sony has already allowed Portal owners to stream games directly from the cloud to the device even if you don't own a PS5. No, it didn't ship that way at first, but the feature was added awhile back.

You know I was working on a a project to make something similar, but more affordable. The original idea was to create a WiiU gamepad for Citra. My prototype was a pair of joycon, a cheap SBC with a decent wifi chip, android go and moonlight, and a six inch, 1080p touchscreen. In theory, you would just use Apollo/Artemis to stream a virtual monitor and the screen/controls would give you all the inputs + gyro + touch, though the microphone and cameras were a no-go.

Ultimately, the SBC I bought couldn't get a solid Internet connection on android and then the project kinda fell to the wayside. I can still imagine a world where, with enough custom components to trim down to exactly what you need, it could be done for ~$100 USD and would be pretty much the same as this

Ah yes. A 2 year old reddit post. I recommend you read the first post on the thread you're in instead.
OT, that luffy drawing looks very appealing, it steps out of that unexpressive fairly odd style while being more proportionate, character wise, than one piece.
It makes me want to see it animated, I bet it would have incredibly fluidity if done with the right director. You know it's good fanart when it makes you use your imagination for more.

It's for an extremely niche audience and that's why hardly anyone cares.

When it's hacked if it can do something cool then it might be worth it.

I like how people still insist on arguing with people that actually do proper research. Anyway I still feel like the portal has potential I'm in no hurry to go out and buy one. It's competition isn't other portable devices with dedicated GPUs I think that's where people get confused on why it's so weak and has limitations.
