Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness now available via Nintendo Switch Online

After being teased in the initial trailer for the GameCube Classics app and formally being announced to release in March during last month's Pokemon Day festivities, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness has just launched on the Nintendo Switch 2 for those subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Those who have recently picked up the Nintendo Switch releases of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen will be disappointed to hear there is no GBA connectivity, with Pokemon caught in this game not being able to be brought into other titles. Regardless, it remains a fantastic standalong experience that is worth a try if you've happened to have overlooked it and have an active subscription.

Its predecessor Pokemon Colosseum is yet to receive a formal release date, though was also featured as a part of the initial GameCube Classics app announcement.

Holy shit that game is expensive. Were there only a few copies?
Lucky I've still got my copy, with no plans on ever selling it.
Good, that game is great and deserves to be in the hands of a fan and not some shady scalper/"collector"!

Same I saw someone selling it at a convention for 40$ 2 years back and i couldn't be happier with the purchase it's my favorite pokemon game

It's like a heard the voices of thousands of retro price sellers for this game cry out suddenly and were silenced

Edit: just checked pricecharting, hasn't hit them yet but I hope it does
As cool as it'd be, the value is in the physical possession of the game. With NSO that's simply not a thing in more ways than one.

Agreed, it would be nice if this was released as a standalone title with connectivity to the GBA re-releases though!
People complained about FRLG being standalone ports instead of being part of NSO. People is complaining now about XD being part of NSO instead of a standalone port.
People will always find something to complain about. Fuck people. The only important thing is the fact this game can be played on official hardware again without having to pay the price of another Switch console.

Nice to have for sure. prices for retro are pretty harsh for this one.
Which is why I'm never giving up my physical copy of this or Colosseum. It'd be impossible to get them again.

Agreed. People are never going to be satisfied with an older game getting a re-release in any way*, unless you put it in their hands free of charge and with absolutely no control over where and how they use it (even to the extent of waiving all rights to legally address any copyright infringement that occurs). Granted, the price for FRLG could've been lower, but I'm sure people would've still complained about them even if they were USD $10 each. Even though those same people were completely fine with the GB/GBC Virtual Console games costing close to that amount each (both each game and each language version) on 3DS/2DS.

*(And just so people know that I'm not talking about older Nintendo games specifically here, I've seen the odd comment or two on Steam forums and elsewhere of people saying that emulating the Mega Man X or Battle Network games was better than buying the collections. One common argument being the lack of save states or rewind in the official compilations, despite the goal of them being to preserve the original experience with some slight QoL changes like retaining passwords for X1-X3 as well as general button remapping. Oh, and sometimes ignoring the online trading/battle in the BN collections because "aN eMuLaToR cAn Do ThAt, ToO".)

If memory serves me right when people asked for ports of the GBA pokemon games it first stemmed from stadium coming to switch then the talk of GB/C until it landed on the topic of GBA Pokemon games outside of the demand for home compatibility when this was still a hypothetical there was quite literally nothing else people asked for (Yes even the event ticket stuff so they're lucky those are even in the base game)

So the topic kinda started out as the vast majority wanting it on NSO then the talk of native ports stuck until the official reveal, which is why I was so confused
I couldn't really focus on the price debate yet, because the vast majority got what they were asking for.

I personally think either way those ports aren't worth it unless you really really wanna experience those games legit.

I can easily play it on my Pixel phone with the Backbone controller, but it's very tempting to use my Switch 2 for it too...

If only Nintendo released more GCN games they'd make it worth paying for the service.

That is so Nintendo . . . Can't make anything decent nowadays so they re release popular games from the past with no enhancement at brand new game price even though they sold the game at full price in multiple iteration already ffs lol.
This company is such a joke.
I do enjoy some of the things they made but i can't stand them anymore, such a disgusting company . . .

We have gamers on here who grew up owning the games we played, we now have gamers who have grown up happy to only have games accessible via subscription. You just have to accept they are two different viewpoints, neither of which are right or wrong.

I even agreed its good the game is available again, however theirs nothing wrong with wanting Nintendo to do a proper release with connectivity to the GBA re-releases though. The connectivity to other games has always been a big part of the Pokemon games after all.
