I don't know if this has anything to do with this but I learned from someone in the InsideGadgets Discord (website where you get GBxCart RW and other fancy stuff) that AliExpress sells some cartridges that are hacked in a way that it indeed saves (and thus writes) inside the ROM rather than with a battery. Especially PKMN Crystal cartridges from AliExpress have this issue.
I learned that the hard way while looking for "donor" carts for a homebrew game I wanted to flash on it. Due to the clear blue shell I went for a few Crystal carts from Ali only to learn that I cannot flash a "normal" game on them and by normal I mean a game that saves "normally" (for example the "real" PKMN Crystal). So my homebrew game wasn't able to create a savegame on that cartridge. Instead I had to use the "Perfect Dark" carts on Ali since they (as that person from the Discord told me) are one of the few Ali carts that actually come with a battery and are MBC5 and voila: My game was able to save on them. So I just swapped the PCB with my Ali Crystal to have the clear blue shell and this is how I learned another lesson in the process.
The issue with those hacked "I have into my own ROM" carts from Ali is, that when you accidentally turn off the game while it saves, not only the save game is lost but also the rom itself is corrupted and the cart becomes useless.
(Reflashing with GBxCart RW should still work though)
I don't know about that, but a game writing to the ROM (and thus switching RAM bank when there's no need to) wasn't something I was pleased with, so I'm glad we could figure this out. :)
Plus, it inadvertedly led me to realize the game was loading corrupted graphics at $9C00 on level 3-2 only, which I took the opportunity to correct (no one had complained so far but I know some people on the Internet can be very picky with that kind of things because it looks a bit "amateurish"), so now everyone should be happy! :D

BTW, please leave some reviews if you liked the patch, that would be very much appreciated!

This is it : I just joined the club of people whose patch has been copied to a cartridge, then got put on sale. 😅

(Obviously don't have anything to do with these people, get the patch for free and print on a cartridge all you want instead!)

Time to report the person who's selling your DX hack, it seems.

Fun fact, I lost the original game and certain not really FF game in a plane trip as a kid. This game got colored, the not really FF game got a cool hack.

Again thank you.

Now we need someone to make a hack combining this game and the sequel.

How'd that work exactly? It's not just mashing the two games' levels together in one ROM, is it?

Probably would need a few new levels and maybe importing a few enemies and bosses from the Nes games. Also an option to pick the difficulty and maybe a minigames only mode where you play both games minigames to try to beat Montana Max high score?

This would require quite a lot of ASM, I'm afraid. So unless a whole team decides to take the job, I can't see this happening in the near future.

There is a program to make Gameboy games that is not that hard to use, but yeah it would take effort.

Making a remake using GB Studio is pretty pointless or at least doesn't have anything to do with this thread in particular. This one uses the original game including it's exact physics and assets to bring them to color.
You're (theoretically) not even allowed to recreate this in GB Studio due to the assets. This DX hack is just a patch that doesn't come with assets on his own which is why it's legal.

This game suffers from annoying flickering in some underground stages where there is contrast with background and characters shadow. On original GB this was no issue due to the nature of the slow screen. In case of Retroarch you can reduce flickering a little by increasing monitor response time. Unfortunately standalone GB emulators lack this feature.

That's a problem considering I play Gameboy games on my Vita and 3DS.

It should be possible to reduce flickering by using similar enough/same colors so it is less noticeable right?

Alternatively I will test the game on several Gameboy Color emulators for the 3DS and Vita to see what works better.

GameYob 3DS tends to be my default for Super Gameboy and Gameboy Color games.

mGBA has versions for 3DS and Vita and is the one I use for plain Gameboy games or Gameboy Color games that do not run well on GameYob 3DS.

The 3DS has a few other Gameboy Color emulators and so does the PSP but mGBA is the one that gets the most updates while GameYob 3DS Super Gameboy mode is really nice when it works. A shame so few Super Gameboy games are actually good.

Gambatte or mGBA?

Congrats, it's an honor to own a bootleg someone on AliExpress made. My test cartridge got the bootleg treatment about a year ago:

This is what the real one looks like. The bootleg just took the DS cover and used that to make their label. My official label doesn't have a cartridge pictured on it. I'm just happy they used a good 4MB PCB with 256K of FRAM.

I already did that, by using close shades of blue instead of black and white in the flickering underground. Granted, our eyes aren't what they used to be. :-)

That section is one of the most seizure-inducing in the game. If the flashing could be disabled entirely, that would be great because photosensitive players might not expect to come across it.

You may do this in a future update, and maybe improve the colorization more given the much better improvements in the DX hack for the second game you're doing.

Is not noticeable on the Brick gameboy thanks to the green screen and is barely annoying in grayscale but in colors/colours? Yeah it can be a problem.

And most modern IPS screens now have FRS mode that foes frame-blending, to negate the flicker and act as proper tansparency.
