So, I'm sure everyone here knows that removing the disc drive from a Wii U and replacing it with a SATA drive (SSD or the like) will cause the vWii Menu to break, stopping you from booting into vWii afterwards.

I was aware of this going into the mod, but now I'd like to ask why that happens. Likely it can't be fixed, but I'd like to know what's actually stopping vWii from booting on a Wii U console without its disc drive.

It seems like it SHOULD boot in theory, nothing's stopping it but itself. What part of the software is forcing it to throw an error on boot?

Thanks for your time, everybody! :D

vWii is independent from WiiU's Cafe OS, and when it boots its code detect if a disc drive exists, if not it refuses to continue.
U need to patch vWii side's iOS for this, and I guess either no one is interested in it or it would break other functions.

If you think it is noisy just remove the drive but keep the circuit board.

Let me guess....maybe it's wrong :

It seems that when launch the channel, the data needs to go around the optical drive.
If you want to block, you have to modify every channel,so no one wants to do this.

Like I said, the disc drive connector is now being used for the uSATA adapter, so even if I wanted to I couldn't reconnect it without losing the internal storage mod.

Thanks for the answer anyway!

Hah! Yeah if that's the case I can totally see why nobody would do this. I was thinking of tackling it but let's be honest, I wouldn't be caught dead patching the Wii Menu Electronic Manual to work without a drive. (/j)

The nandloader is the curlpit. It's the signed and encrypted binary that gets run on the PPC to set it into Wii mode and allow the execution of usigned Wii PPC code. Since the bootrom in the PPC only allows a signed executable, there is no good way around that.
But the nandloader goes through the IOS to check the Disc drive. it would be possible to patch all the IOS. But no one has released a patcher for that.
There exists a poc of a patched vIOS80 (the system menu IOS) that allows together with priiloader to boot into a USB loader and use that to play Wii Games. But it isn't public.

Makes me wonder if updating the interposer with minimal logic to work around drive detection would be more straightforward.

Don't mind me though, just sharing a random thought. It might not be applicable at all due to one reason or another.

No, I think it would need to simulate a valid drive including the right drive key. Also it hten would need to detect when to use the SATA SSD and when to simulate.

And I was wrong, Gary, shared the patch to disable the disc drive check: https://github.com/GaryOderNichts/P...mmit/09c79ee26763dc3880168b26843289b8faa99479
Sorry for asking but, is there a way to patch this without accessing to the vWii? Since it crashes due to the lack of a disc drive and seems it can't be patched with a VC Inject, is there a way to get it working?

You can access the vWii file system from the Wii U. So it would be possible to replace or patch the files from there. But the patcher currently is only implemented for Wii
