The Switch 2's Joy-Cons will not have Hall Effect sticks

The Nintendo Switch found itself at the center of technical issues throughout its lifespan, thanks to its Joy-Con controllers. Referred to as Joy-Con drift, it led to lawsuits, forcing Nintendo to have a dedicated repair center for the controllers where they would fix them for free. Since the Switch's launch, there has been the advent of the hall effect style joystick, which aren't prone to drifting. Third-party retailers have released a multitude of these drift-resistant gamepads, and with the imminent launch of the Switch 2, some wondered if Nintendo would also adopt the hall effect sticks for the Joy-Con 2.

However, in an interview between Nintendo of America and media outlet NintendoLife, NoA's vice-president of product development Nate Bihldorff confirmed that the Joy-Con 2 will not have hall effect sticks.

NintendoLife: Let's jump off the sensitivity stuff then and talk about the stick of the Switch 2 Joy-Con because it feels so different to the original Switch's analog stick. So is it a Hall Effect stick? Were you inspired by the Hall Effect stick?

NoA: Well, the Joy-Con 2's controllers have been designed from the ground up. They're not Hall Effect sticks, but they feel really good. Did you experience both the Joy-Con and the Pro Controller?

Bihldorff explained that the Switch 2's new Pro Controller will be very quiet in terms of stick clack. In direct response to questions about stick drift, he stated, "Really, every time we put out a new hardware, whether it's a new system or an accessory, [Nintendo is] designing from the ground up to be the best possible experience for our consumers, whether it's the immediate effect of the Joy-Cons that you're playing, how they're interacting with the game, or durability. They take it and rebuild it so that we can give the best possible experience."

If the sticks either use Nintendo's new patent, or are just of higher quality than the switch 1 stick boxes, it should be fine. I have PS1 dual shocks (using potentiometers) that work great despite decades of use. The reason the JC1 sticks drifted (iirc) was because of poor quality, causing the contacts to wear out much quicker than normal. It is reasonable to think that even if they use potentiometer sticks, they could get higher quality sticks, especially since they are physically larger now.

Hall effect sticks might have been affected by the magnets they have in the joycons, and they do tend to drift if you let the batteries get too low. Also of note is that GuliKit has some patents on their design. No idea if that factored into it, though.

Not to defend Nintendo, but… isn’t the Dreamcast literally the only console to have this thing in first-party controllers?
Not to mention that there are several companies that have their own patents for hall-effect joystick or hall-effect joystick-like concepts. Even manufacturers who wanted to do hall-effect joysticks can't just throw it in without making sure they're not violating any non-open-use patents. At least, not unless they want to suffer a patent lawsuit from one of the many hall-effect/hall-effect-like patent owners.

In light of that, I'd like to feel that Nintendo's making a smart move by not simply shoving hall-mark in, especially if they're using the patent concept already noted to give similar functionality.

Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will have a worse battery life on average than the original Switch console.
  • The Switch 2 battery life is approximately 2 to 6.5 hours depending on the game.
  • The latest Switch 1 models have battery lives of approximately 4.5 to 9 hours, for comparison.

Situation is getting more interesting by each passing day.
So they have their own tech but didn't explicitly said it was magnetic, or equivalent, instead of resistive, which could have immediately extinguish the driftgate wildfire.

Looks definitely a huge faux-pas, mainly impacting tech savvy niche, but still.

What is the worst ? Not a single child in their ad.
Every frame being a calculation, it horrifies me.

Similar to Switch v1 (first 2017 model), though. Also, switch Lite goes only from from 3 to 7 hours.

Also, similar to most 3DS/2DS models.

I wouldn't be mad at this given it's way more powerful than the OG Switch. So there's a lot of battery optimization to even get those times.

If we all imagine it we can warp reality, let's make it real!
Better imagine all we have a trillion dollar meme from the simpson series.

Now seriously i will buy nintendo switch2 only with those prices:

Usually I buy Nin consoles day 1 because they tend to have low specs but good ideas and games.

I have a Switch since 2018. I struggle to play something on it. Had to replace the sticks with HAL, the rail and the zr/zl flex cable, though.

Games:
Monster Hunter XX was very fine, Rise is a desaster fps wise. Bought it on Steam and played it on 120fps, game instantly got playable.
Pokemon Aceus is a desaster (Sword/Shield were barely ok), fps wise, too. Technical aspect is solved either by modding and OC or Emulator.
There are a few 1st party title I played like MK or DK which I enjoyed. In 7 years I maybe accumulated 500-800hrs?
That is not a lot but the console cost less than 300$ back then. So yeah, that was great value for money.
Beside 1st party, 99% from the library is practically on Steam. I do not enjoy skaled down high resolutions on handheld so thats a pass. Rather playing those on PC.

Switch 2?
No serious new ideas, questionable design choices (e.g. tech is most propably ancient. It goes perf/quality mode and does not guarantee any kind of minimal fps [which they could enforce in their game policy]). I prognose that Elden Ring will play like absolute garbage.
Launch titles are ok at best. Nothing spectacular except that wheelchair basketball. Oh man.
No HAL sticks? Man this thing will cost maybe like 600$. That is too much money for a potential decoration. I passed on WiiU and I'll most likely pass on this one, too.
Also pay for Tech demo and every single ****** game resolution update? Are you insane?
They did mention an "upgrade" for their absolute garbage rip off PlayStation subscription which only has 20+ yo games and network which does not work most of the time? I bet this is not free, either.
No, I ain't buying this. Gladly pass on this money sinking machine.

Cheaptendo.

Why the fuck idiots keep funding this company when its so set to fuck you and every other fucker they can find, over.

I cant believe they're actually going to re recycle the lazy shit teck demo Breath of The Wild, like it wasn't painfully boring to play it the first time round.

Like playing it again in 1080p and upto 120fps is going to change the fact..... ITS A SACK OF SHIT GAME.

We can already play it @4K 120+FPS if we really needed to play this shovelware crap with HDR and RT.....

Lol at nintendo bragging about HDR like its something new.

Just proves the point that all you ever get is cheap shit from the past.

Sure it is has no hall effect, this tech is way to advanced for nintendo.
Expect them on Switch 3.
I mean look at the specs of the switch 2. The internal storage amount is so 2021?
I swear they act like storage cost so much to add its crazy. 256gb is great for pictures and text data. Not full blown games.

"Is the joystick made with non-shitty specs?"

"Well no but uuuh they feel really good 😏"
