Hardware The SUPER5 OLED screen mod for the Switch Lite uses a 1080p screen and stretches the Switch Lite's 720p signal to fit.

Appreciate the thorough follow-up and updates, it really helps those of us who are keeping an eye on these mods.

The future "Super5+" with 1080p support sounds potentially promising, but I wouldn't get one until internal 1080p is implemented in Horizon. I've long learned not to buy hardware with the promise of future software that may never materialize. Also, I'm not a huge fan of 1080p internal regardless, since the Switch already struggles with 720p in handheld mode. This issue is compounded by the Lite having less undervolt/overclock potential than other Mariko Switches due to its lower power limits.

The lack of touch isn't as big of a deal for regular games, but isn't touch required to navigate Hekate's menus? I can see that being a major issue for modded units.

It's a shame because I think with a true no-compromise screen solution, a modded Lite could be the ultimate portable console.

lol wow “Super5+” talks already?

Still tons of unfulfilled super5 regular orders as I understand it. And I just read his X posts sounds like lots of contingencies for getting that working even if you have a chipped lite

The man is ambitious it’s cool he sells his small scale projects but it seems like announcing a ‘fixed’ product that still isn’t a certainty of fixing it, while continuing to ship out current ones … too fast a cycle of newer gen’s of a mod for an aging system

What a bit of a mess! The colors on those photos for super5 look outstanding though. And then you might be holding out longer for something that is never delivered be it hardware or the tweaks to make it happen

Outputting 1080p in handheld mode on a lite sounds like a scary proposition to be honest in terms of thermals and power consumption. Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Then some later models might not even have touch and the touch model will be discontinued shortly?

I’m assuming overall the mod has been worth it for people who have gone for it? Sharp pixels are important to me broadly speaking though I don’t want things looking interpolated I hope it isn’t that dramatic. More pics would help to decide

Great photos but can we see some text heavy stuff with finer details to really evaluate the tradeoff in quality vs stock native 720p lcd panel? Is it as dramatic as op let on with those 3d world icon photos or did he maybe get a bit of a dud? Couldn’t there in theory be some variation or multiple manufacturers going on even if supersampling to a 1080p spec panel?

I feel like this title menu doesn’t really embody finer details with large text and simplified 3d sprites

Also how has battery life been with a new screen installed out of curiousity?

it is interesting this is like the only place that talks about this issue, but I haven't seen much chatter about super5 specifics other than a few YouTube videos just showing off installation + quick footage of the results
I just tried taking pics of text but unfortunately my camera isn't good enough to pick up the details. Wish I had a macro lens :)

To my eyes, the Super5 OLED is superior in sharpness and colors while playing in a realistic scenario.
However under a microscope, Stock LCD panel will have more jagged edges which appear sharper because jagged edges are straight lines of pixels. If you have really good eyes, you can notice these jagged eges on the stock LCD if you put your eyes close, and the image doesn't look as sharp from normal viewing distance. It's kinda like anti-aliasing, Super5 OLED appears sharper because of this smooting effect.

TLDR - Super5 OLED is superior in colors/blacks, and appears sharper due to this 'anti-aliasing / upscaling' effect (just my opinion).

Haven't noticed any diff in battery. Screen gets brighter...but also doesn't have to illuminate as many pixels due to OLED so...

Can't say if OP got a dud...it's possible since his photo of princess peach in the original post doesn't look like mine.
Hope you're not offended OP, just sharing my experience  :yayswitch:

I believe that's called blur. It's literally the opposite. It's smoother not sharper.
So it can't look sharper because it's smoother and less jagged? 🤔

My fault for misusing the word sharper 😂

Let's try that again.
Super5 OLED 'appears' smoother, crispier, and less jagged than the stock LCD.

This is what I consider 'sharp' B-)

Actual difference in 'sharpness' is negligible (have to be careful how I use that word...maybe my idea of sharp is wrong ^_^).
However if you plan on playing under a microscope, you may be disappointed. :rofl2:

You just misused another word, "crispier", that's just a synonym of sharper. :rofl2:

Regardless, I'm extremely sensitive to scaling blur. This is certainly not far off from the look of DS games played at full screen on a 3DS system. I like to use that as an example because it's something so plainly obvious, yet so many people seem to be blind to it.

I think it's a significant caveat, and I strongly recommend anyone that appreciates sharp 1:1 pixel graphics to avoid this product. A better product already exists, and doesn't have these issues. It's called the Nintendo Switch OLED model.

I know what you mean, ds games on 3ds always bothered me.

That's why we need more pics from people who have units + are good photographers + better games playing on them to get a better idea :D

it sounds like overall its still a major boost from stock panel, but this gives me quite some pause. Especially since I would be doing it to an unmodded lite, I hope more tweak things wouldn't be needed out of the box..

edit - just saw pics above, that looks nice to my eyes! still want more, wish I could think of a good game. Maybe 3d world with good photo quality? The OP's were maybe too 'cell phone picture' quality up that close.

Mine were suboptimal/zoomed phone pics, yes, but it's obvious even in these much higher quality ones if you zoom in a little and check out the copyright text in the lower left or any of the other text of the last two images. You don't have to zoom in this far to notice it, but to best illustrate what I mean I zoomed in more. Looks the exact same way as the photos I sent:

Mine were zoomed in and cropped to show the issue better, but as I mentioned in my post I made sure they were properly in focus and tried not to misrepresent. The zoom isn't to make it look worse or claim we play under a microscope, it's just to help you notice things that might not be visible due to image compression or due to viewing on a phone screen and to illustrate how different the pixel layout is (as OP excellently showed us by using a literal microscope haha). Of course, we don't play under a microscope and this is a matter of taste. Some might prefer the softening effect of the image interpolation, some may prefer the crisp 1:1 pixel output of the stock screen, some might not notice at all, and some games it might not make a difference.

I think I've shared enough pics to get my point across

I was trying to bait you guys into zooming into my photos, and you fell for it.
No one plays their Switch Lite zoomed in or under a microscope.
When you're playing your Switch Lite like a normal person, you won't notice any difference, especially on a small 5.5" panel.

As someone who owns both, I highly recommend the Super5 OLED panel :yayswitch:
Such a huge improvement in the colors of the Switch Lite, literally a night and day difference in person.
For some reason my camera is making the colors on the stock Switch Lite look better than they actually are.

As for those of you guys saying you're sensitive and can notice it, then yes, you should probably avoid this product...

I'm weird, I'm one of those people who appreciates the effort that goes behind making upgrades like this. The OP's initial issue with the resolution not being disclosed...I'll try to stay out of that, only because this information did not change my view of the product, and I still can't notice any negative difference from a normal playing distance.

For the Nintendo Switch 2, if it's released as LCD instead of OLED, how long do you think it'll take before someone develops a drop-in OLED replacement for it? It's absoultely nuts to me that someone brought an OLED panel for the Lite to market (even if it's not perfect to people here).

View attachment 489404View attachment 489403Brother, I would like to ask if using the super5 will cause the battery level of the console to weaken?

It looks... worse? I don't know how far your Lite is from your eyes when you're gaming, but mine is like 12-15"-ish and I would immediately notice how unnatural and blurry the Super5 looks. Though that might not be an issue if you're not used to [and somewhat, expecting] a native look. I appreciate @RatchetRussian making this thread to let people like me know that this is not the product for us. And thanks to everyone who posted pics :grog:

You're not wrong, per se, but the Switch OLED is far from a perfect replacement. It's significantly heavier [or feels as such to me] and the Joy-Cons rails wearing down over time and loosening up makes for a bit of a frustrating experience during handheld play.

I hope some Chinese manufacturer makes a better [720p] copy of these.

@Smith9527 I feel like there is no noticeable difference in battery over stock LCD. But this will depend on your brightness level. I feel like my battery drains faster, but I've been using a very high brightness level because it makes the colors pop so nicely.

I would say wait for other opinions and don't trust me here...because I didn't play on my Stock Lite LCD much if at all...I hated the screen, so I didn't get a good gauge of battery life on it.

All good! We all have varying degrees of vision so what I see may not be what you see. No right or wrong. If there was something wrong with your eyes, you wouldn't know, because everything looks correct from your own perspective.

Agreed, good to have posts like these. There shouldn't be any secrets 😀

I just wanted to say that I truly do appreciate this thread. I was an early adopter of the HDMI version of this screen replacement and my experience with TakiUdon_ has been.. horrible.

I appreciate your uploads; gave me the confidence to learn soldering and take on mod projects.

God damn, I wish I had noticed this thread sooner. I bought a Switch Lite solely for this mod because I always liked it's form factor, but didn't care for the LCD screen. A 1080p screen for 720p content is a dealbreaker though, the scaling blur is very noticeable and will absolutely bother me once my screen arrives...

I appreciate your contributions to the modding scene as well, Thank you Voultar!

I didn't want this to be a Taki bash thread, but he is definitely a difficult character to appreciate. Especially when he resorted to belittling my console modding side business after being confronted about the lack of clarity of the Super5 products. Attached is most of my interaction between myself and him for anyone curious about his pitiful response to this issue. This is a public discord, so for readability, many messages are cropped in between ours:
