Hi! I'm really new to this and I was hoping I could get some guidance. I want to get all my games and save data from my old red 3DS onto a special silver mario-themed 3DSXL, which someone I knew region-unlocked and modded for me. I don't know what method he used and can't contact him anymore, so I hope it doesn't affect anything. I haven't used the 3DSXL for anything yet, and most of my 3DS games are on cartridges, if that's important.

I was thinking of using this SD transfer method to get my data on the 3DSXL. I'll attach a picture of the link because it seems I'm too new to embed links in posts rn.

I'm okay with modding my original 3DS, I could use the 3ds hacks guide.

So what I'm asking is:
- What's the best and safest way to get my old 3DS save data onto this region-unlocked 3DSXL? Is it this SD transfer method?
- Is there any way to transfer over my miis, themes and badges, and if not, could I keep them on my old 3DS? (so just transferring over the game data and keeping everything else on the original)
- Also, if I want to download a bunch of games on my 3DSXL, should I get that homebrew stuff first?
- Is there anything I should be careful with/watch out for in general while handling this?

I'd appreciate any help or links to other posts that could help me :) Thank you!

Normally you would use the standard System Transfer function for this, but System Transfer only works between two systems originally of the same region. Apparently you can make it work with a region-changed system, but you'd still need some sort of console-unique ID from a third, non-region-changed system, so it's kind of complicated.

In other words: you should just reinstall everything from scratch on your new system. You can transfer your save data from your old system by installing CFW and using Checkpoint, and then use Checkpoint to restore the save data on the new system again. It's possible to extract save data without installing CFW, but it's much simpler just to use Checkpoint as long as you don't mind installing CFW.

If that looks messy and complicated to you, that's because it is. Probably best to avoid it.

Official badges are tied to your NNID, and there's no way to transfer your NNID without using the standard System Transfer function. I think there are tools for extracting your official badges and installing them on the other system, though.

How were you going to download a bunch of games without "that homebrew stuff"?

If you don't already have Checkpoint and FBI on your new system, you should follow https://3ds.guide/checking-for-cfw and https://3ds.guide/restoring-updating-cfw. (A region-changed unit almost certainly has CFW installed on it.) Do not follow video guides.

Ok so I’ll mod my old 3DS, use CFW and Checkpoint, and then look into extracting the badges. Thanks so much for your help :) !!
