I went to a buddy's place yesterday and hopped onto his wi-fi network on my unpatched V1 Switch running firmware 16.0.0, Atmosphere 1.5.1, all the patches needed to run NSPs and a few dumped NSPs. As I always do, I made sure to punch in the two DNS servers that comprise 90dns. Within minutes I was prompted for an update to my Switch's firmware, presumably to 16.0.3. Ordinarily, when trying to access the eShop and "making a new Nintendo account", I am given an error. This time it worked. I can only assume that my console is banned by now.

(a) What the hell happened?

I'd imagine that if I mistyped the IP addresses and entered an incorrect IP address that didn't correspond to a DNS server at all, that I'd have no internet whatsoever (or at least the Switch would not be able to resolve URLs into IPs)

(b) Is it safe to assume that this console is banned?

Admittedly, I hadn't really planned on running stock firmware on it or connecting it to Nintendo's servers. But not having the option sucks and having this thing basically lose $150 worth of resale value sucks more.

(c) Last time I was on these forums asking this question, I was told that 90dns is the best way of blocking the console's connection to Nintendo. Searching before and after this incident shows enough people suggesting that this isn't the best way to block Nintendo telemetry and that there are better ways. Clearly 90dns isn't 100% reliable at what it's supposed to be doing; otherwise I wouldn't have used it and subsequently been able to contact Nintendo's servers. What should I be using instead?

Any insight on this would be most helpful and appreciated. Thank you in advance.

TBH, I warned people a while back, that this only delays bans, it does not stop them! lol if it fails, you're kinda screwed!

I'll never get banned! XD my switch is boss, no emunand, no spoofing... TBH hiding makes ya stand out more! cause the second you pop online with a bunch of junk out of the ordinary.... go figure. X3

I've never looked into any spoofing techniques, my philosophy is to hide in sight! don't pirate anything until the end of a consoles life, and don't be a multiplayer hax0r. X3 so far, sticking to those three things, I've never felt I was gonna get banned. and I've done everything under the sun besides those three things! XD to this day I have my 2ds, modded, and I made it to the end of it's life... no hassle, and I feel it will be the same with the Switch!

And the other thing I find, No one is ever honest when they get banned, it's why no one knows "for sure" what gets them banned, but I'm pretty sure i figured it out. Cause I'm honest. o3o

[take with grain of salt of course!]

I wont be banned for using things like themes, cheats in offline games, modding breath of the wild, giving myself items in ACNH single player.... you name it... none of that is what Nintendo is looking for! they are looking for others that take what does not belong to them.... that includes games, and being an unfair hax0r in online games! XD In the end, those things hurt players and Nintendo, so that's what they look for.

They just don't tell you that,, Trust me, Nintendo knows all about 90dns, and don't think they don't! so that's a red flag there.... The switch modding scene is here for anyone to look up, Nintendo included.

They could in the end make an update one day that str8 up banned everyone using atmosphere if they wanted to... by just detecting a single file or code running that isn't theirs, someplace where it's not supposed to be, ect... if they thought necessary!

Not everyone modding their switch is a bad egg, and truthfully many of them, like me, still make them money! so why ban them?? [unless you are a youtuber / streamer and you make a profit off of that shade! Kinda put a target on yourself there if ya do that!! same reason Nintendo patches out the kool glitchz n junk in games, cause loud mouths bring attention to it! don't need to be a genius to figure that out! XD lol but that's a story for another day!]

Nintendo just does not share what they know, or why they ban ya! Cause they like watching you "self-ban" while thinking you're being clever! and run around like chickens with their head knocked off when reality finally hits ya.

The more shade the task casts, the more red flags you be pushing up! In my humble opinion. But as usual it's all just "speculation!"... Right? ;3

If it was your only means of protection, then yeah your days are probably counted

Your dirty nand should not contact Nintendo's servers, ever. Installing NSPs you don't own is a ban guarantee.

Here's how I've been doing for years, and I haven't been banned : emunand with all the hacks you want. I've used Incognito when it released, but now exosphere/dns mitm works pretty much the same (tho I won't restore the prodinfo via Incognito, not only because the app doesn't work anymore but also because the day I update atmosphere and forget to make the config, I could be screwed)
Regular sysnand with only legal stuff I own. Now sure I don't use it that often, but when I do I can see I'm not banned. I can play Splatoon 3 from time to time, play some online games and stuff without any issue. Sometimes I do use atmosphere for some homebrew stuff, ftp server, screenshots sharing or save backups, but you also got to be aware of what you are doing and with what game since they can still ban you if you edit some save on a game they actively monitor (I still don't know if you can get banned for editing your save in Animal Crossing for example, would love to transfer my save from emunand to sysnand to play with some friends but without knowledge I don't do it, I know that Mario Kart Smash Bros and Splatoon gets you banned tho)

90DNS as your only means of protection is at best foolish, especially if you take your console with you and connect it to other networks. 90DNS actively blocks specific adresses from Nintendo, the day Nintendo decides to change all those adresses or just add some, you won't know when 90DNS will update so might be screwed, and that's assuming you've not made a mistake when writing the IP.
I do put some of the blame on the people who talked about it like it was the only thing that you'll ever need, without ever explaining how it works, the risks it implies and how to avoid any issue as much as possible. It's not a bad service at all, but people have been using it foolishly and it's very much due to misinformation.

So yeah, best of luck out there.

NSP almost always = ban. If you connect and they see a game you never bought, you get flagged, and the ban is actually not instant, they wait a bit before they do it, so you have no idea why it happen! hahaha XD does not take a rocket scientists, lots of places delay bans so peeps cant make excuses and try and weasel out of it XD

90dns is a very good tool, if peeps use it right, you should only connect to your sysnand online, never use emunand... it's dirty A F if you have games you never bought, you're just asking to get banned if 90dns fails ya! XD my switch is a 1st wave low number one, it's been running without emunand it's whole life, and I've never got banned. I don't be a dirty 'haxor' or cheater in online games, nor do I pirate games XD tbh.... if you avoid that junk, resist the temptation... you'll be good! tbh, I'd only personally resort to that shit after the consoles life time... Unless you've already been banned for it, or generally do not care about Nintendo or their services, go for it! but it's not worth doing if you care anything about your Nintendo account! XD too risky for my blood!

[this has nothing to do with anything.... but... is there any way to spoof the games so the switch thinks it's running from the game card reader? that might be harder for Nintendo to check XD ...just a thought. I don't know the "pirating" scene that well, so I'm not sure if that's a thing or not, I'm honestly just curious! XD]

Is your buddy on a different ISP by chance?

Many ISPs (including mine) run a whitelist of "official approved DNS servers" that you're allowed to use. If you try to use something out of the common pools they either block it entirely or inject their own.

I can't use the Al Azif DNS for PS4 either. I was told by my ISP (after they denied the whitelist even existing twice) that they could add the DNS to their whitelist if I wrote up a petition explaining my case and what benefits this DNS had over other major players.

Why don't people just wipe their serial numbers? It has never failed me. I haven't used DNSMITM or anything that like. As cocky as @JayBae is, I feel like they are almost very accurate in what will get you banned. I've gone online in Atmosphere+OFW and played around with cheats and stuff and I've never been banned. Once you start going online to fuck other people over, then you'll get the attention of Nintendo. Back in the day, I installed NSPs and ran them while online and didn't get banned. But it may be different now.

Because we have no idea how? Most people are just kludging through this via online tutorials and piecing together bits of esoteric knowledge on random forums, and none of the how-to-Switch tutorials I've run through mention such a thing?

I'm just happy to have the damn thing even working. :rofl2:

You can use Exosphere.ini or dns mitm if you can't use 90dns.

The steps in your post are different from the re-entry guide. I followed everything correctly on my Mariko two months ago, and I've never had to modify anything in the system_settings.ini (other than setting auto cheats to not be enabled by default) and using the 90DNS testing homebrew app, I can see that it's blocking everything correctly and I can't access the eShop on emuNAND. The default.txt is also dramatically shorter than yours. Is your way "better?"

So 90 DNS didn’t work because you didn’t configure the DNS server information when you connected to that new network. This end of itself is the reason why accounts get banned, mainly due to user error of the 90 DNS.

I used to pirate stuff on sysnand a few years back. I don't really do anything like that anymore and have my own dumps if I need them. Still shocked my Switch wasnt banned.

What are you even talking about nsp’s? Use an emunand on a separate SD and thats it.

atmosphere does serial/prodinfo blanking exosphere

Honestly, Incognito should be avoided. Exosphere does this a lot better and safer.
yeah that and incognito hasnt been a recommended use since sxcore first released due to it semi bricking consoles

My first Launch Switch is already banned. (Connected to Wi-Fi while on SX OS by mistake, and that's all it took. I didn't launch any pirated content at all.) I shut down the console immediately, but the damage was done. And when did they decide to pull the ban hammer on me? Why, in the last hour of FinalFest in Splatoon 2, of course! The most inopportune time possible.

So now I just keep it updated for piracy, and keep my 2nd Erista Switch an unhacked virgin for playing online.

you not used the most recommended tutorials then
