    No it's just you. The IR camera on the wiimote is not used for virtual console games. Covering the IR camera only has an affect while pointing at the sensor bar anyway. Try some new batteries or another wiimote as suggested above me.

    You never need to pull the power plug to reset the wii. Just push and hold the power button for 3-5 seconds.

    A free fix would be to wait till a new update come out... Or check to see if any games are out with 3.4 on them, animal crossing or something? See if it prompts for an update. Also have you tried updating from N again?
