No longer the look of the wii?

Eurogamer and official nintendo magazine are reporting on a new wii design (wii slim anybody?) hitting "in time for Christmas" (if we get word of a firmer launch timeframe then it will be shared) with the most notable feature thus far being the lack of backwards compatibility and with it a lack of gamecube ports which is sure to raise a few eyebrows; with gamecube controllers working on several wii games they are often them the more desirable control method (certainly the loss of them caused much spitting of drink when this came up on our IRC channel).

Whether this will be a dual designs option or the old lines extinguished a la the recent 360 slim is unknown to us at present although other bundles are said to be coming around the same time so probably not.

Given that backwards compatibility is largely hardware based as opposed to some of the software options offered up in the other consoles this generation it has some interesting implications for hacking either towards restoring functionality (it would not be the first time ports were left unpopulated and everything crammed into a new case) or that some of the older hacking methods might not hold (it will quite a shock if this did not come with a software update). Prices are expected to be lower as the phrase "value bundle" is being thrown about which given the PS3 price cut long predicted and just announced is probably a good business decision. This being said it also being bundled with some games and the new wiimote plus controller it might not get to the "toy purchase" level.[/p]

Eurogamer link 2 has a picture but it is unknown if it is concept art or not.

New PS3 model (though not a major change), PSP E-1000, now this

Your turn, Xbox.
They're making a new model, it has a matte finish instead of glossy
The matte ones have been around since the glossy ones. They're just ditching the glossy ones altogether.

Looks cool, though I see no point in it.

i am not happy about this because nintendo are following in sony footsteps removing stuff when they see fit, what has gone into nintendo? i still have a launch wii with all my original features intact, but should i worry about buying a second wii before the original models phase out or am i safe with my launch wii, it's never died on me and has lasted me since it's launch. it would be nice to have a bit of history though.

i am sorry about late adaptors though, they missed out on a lot of old features, why take all the features away like sony, i really don't understand nintendo, they are making a profit on each console sold they really don't need to cut corners, unless this has to do with the 3ds and it's low sales, they are trying to cut back money from other hardware, they really don't need to though, nintendo are doing well as it is and they don't need to copy everything sony does.

so the wii and wii u will both now not be able to play gamecube games, once the orignal gamecube console is gone, what are people going to play thier gamecube games? "i know lets recharge them again to play the same games they own!" nintendo says.

complete corporal corruption and greed on nintendo's part, they have enough money as it is and they want...more? don't make me loose respect for you nintendo.

so they loose the bc on the wiis so no one can play gamecube games on them, so when people buy a wii u and realise that they can't play gamecube games on it, they think "ah the wii have gc compatibility" they buy one of the new ones and realise that it's gone from the new models, one disappointed customer.

what we will start seeing from nintendo is "gamecube HD" collections or downloads from their eshop for us to download to make as much profit as they can from us *cough sony*, just look at me for christ sake, i have over 70 legit gamecube games, do you see me buying anything from their eshop that i already own? nope. greed greed greed and more greed.

oh and thanks nintendo, my launch wii is going to be worh much much more now, just watch the prices on ebay soar for a launch console, the excat same thing happned with the orignal ps3 60gb when sony removed bc on new ps3 models, just watch the prices.

Does anyone even honestly care about this? It's another trick by Nintendo to raise Wii's sales, as maybe a few people will now rush to the stores to buy the Gamecube-enabled Wiis. Other than that, this is pointless.

When did console revisions turn into corporal corruption. It's not like their throwing excess copies Mario Kart in the pacific ocean. Overreaction no?
