I had my wii softmodded by someone in town but didn't really dicuss the donts with me. As far system and game updtes are concerned what should be done? I'm assuming don't update?

Depends on the SM currently out. Right now it's 4.1 which doesn't hurt much of anything important. You'll have to reinstall a few things, but it won't *break* anything.
But if everything is working and you have no idea what you're doing, just don't update.
