I hope this is ok to ask but how do I back up the save file on a retail cartridge onto the microSD?

tHERE SHOULD BE A STICKY ABOUT IT SOMEWHERE, (oops, caps) seeing as how slow the site is today though, with a slot 2 device you could use rain/rein.
Hmm, just tried to find it, but couldn't ... weird, I remember a sticky with "How to backup savegames" orso.

Try google in the meantime I guess,,,

I like Rudolph's Tools. It allows you to backup both ROMs and saves.

The easiest way is with the 3in1. If you have something like the EZ Flash 3-in-1, it copies the ROM/save to the memory in the memory expansion, and when you reboot the tool, it copies it to the SD card. It can be a bit finicky, though. I've had many cases where my backup process is lost before I can finish archiving. Annoying with ROMs larger than 32MB (since you have to back it up in "parts" due to the amount of RAM on the 3in1).

I think you could try the wi-fi mode as well (if you don't want to buy a memory expansion, or only have DSi)... But I'm not sure how well it works... or HOW it works...

FYI the files linked in that rudolph blog link are dead, and have been for some time. you can find all of those files in the gbatemp download center. also none of the 3in1 tools work on the 3in1+, they were never updated.

that guide will help with wifi.

It's unofficial, but who cares!

I recently purchased an NDS Backup Adapter from ConsoleSource.com that is working great. Simple USB device that you plug your retail cart into and software to backup/restore raw savs. It was even able to backup/restore my trouble carts like Moon, Pokemon Platinum, and Top Trumps - Doctor Who the Rudolph's tools weren't able to.

Hm, that's interesting... but is there a homebrew option? I'd rather not have to buy something JUST to backup my Platinum save....

If you don't want to buy any hardware at all, then try this solution.

But for Platinum, the best solution is the NDS Backup Adapter. Every software backup utility I've tried, including those that use SLOT2 devices, are not backing up or restoring both SAV slots from Platinum, which uses rotating primary and backup SAV slots.

You said it yourself in post #3. Rudolphs tools.

That really was dumb of you.
You seemed to miss the point that Rascal made that Rudolph's Tools won't work on newer games, such as Platinum (I tried it myself; ROM backed up fine, but the gave says the save is corrupted).

Fair enough, it doesn't work with Platinum. I'm sure there will be a patch made by someone sooner or later. If you really need a homebrew save restore/backup tool, why not make it yourself?

Sorry? Someone's already posted a link to ALL of Rudolphs backup tools... So yeah, thanks for that.

To who wants to try to backup from retail Pokemon Platinum cart to flashcard and vice versa
http://www.projectpokemon.org/forums/showthread.php?t=583.
I used this with Rudolph WiFi Tool to copy my savegame from Acekard 2 to one retail cart.

I've lost only the recorded videos from battles and rankings at Battle Frontier (but I haven't done much progress at this, so didn't hurt)

Because I'm a terrible coder, that's why. Why so defensive?
