I'm trying to use an ftp client but can't figure it out. The IP address shows on the 3ds screen isn't the one on my tablet and I can't get them to connect. I can't change the IP on my tablet or 3ds in settings and I can't remember what I did before to get it to work (if I even ever did lol)

Use ftpd. Open Filezilla or whatever ftp client you use, put the 3DS's ip address, and port number being 5000, and connect as anonymous. Use a manual ip address on the 3ds so it wouldn't change or interrupt mid transfer..

For use fpt you must use and app because you need a port and using just the ip of the 3ds wont help you, 3dshell is the best option in 3ds, just press select in the app and you will see the ip and port, if you use windows 10 you do not even need a program to access to 3ds, you could use the windows explorer and create the connection

Is there an android app that I can set the ip manually like filezilla? I don't have a computer. I've don't this before, I just can't remember what I did to get the IPs to be the same 😅

It's impossible for the IP addresses of two devices to be the same. The whole point of IP addressing is to let you identify unique devices from one another. All FTP clients must give you the option to specify the IP address or hostname of the FTP server you want to use. It wouldn't be an FTP client otherwise.

He needs to have SMB1.0 enabled (in Win10) for data management to work on pc.. And even then it can be iffy..

I personally use AndFTP, Solid Explorer works just as well. FTP (with 3ds) works better with my phone than it does with my laptop for some reason. Use FTPD, it's pretty straightforward. If the connection fails 1 or 2 times, just keep repeating it'll connect.
Don't set up a password, just connect as "anonymous"..

I tried both apps and I think my problem is the server address? When I open ftpd on 3ds it shows an ip address(?) - Andftp didn't show me anything, solid explorer showed the same as any other ftp app I tried which the last number for the server is different. I'm assuming I need these numbers to be the same? I read somewhere you can open settings in ftpd on 3ds to change the number (not the port, the 0.0.0.0) by pressing select but all that does for me is toggle the screens on and off

Look, you need to check the internet and WiFi settings in your 3ds before launching ftpd. Make sure you set an ip address that's not taken by other devices, don't set it to automatic. Dns you can change to 8.8.8.8 or something else it doesn't matter. And Wpa 2 security and no proxy. When you're finished click connect and it will if everything is working correctly.
Then go to AndFTP and set up a new ftp server then put the 3ds's ip address and the port number 5000 and connect as anonymous when prompted..
Here's how i have it:

You might wanna change your phone's ip address to manual, put a number at the end that's not taken by any other devices in your network. Dns should be 8.8.8.8.
Oh,both the 3ds and your phone have to be connected to the same WiFi otherwise it wouldn't work.

Thanks very much, it seems I'm just at one more hiccup. I copied the settings you showed me exactly but now I'm stuck here... everywhere I look says it shouldn't need one or set it as an anonymous connection but I don't see that as an option anywhere.

I think @Doux91 means that you can just type "ftp://whatever" into the Windows Explorer address bar – but a dedicated FTP client tends to work better.

Also, you can in theory use microSD Management via muCommander without having to enable SMB 1.0 at the OS level.

Do you have the ftpd app open on the 3ds or not? Also don't change the username or password there either.
Yes it's open. And how would I even change the settings in ftpd? Not sure if I already mentioned but the only buttons that do anything when it's open are start which closes the app and select which turns the screens on and off

There are settings that you can change user name and password are one of them. I think you have to hold "x" or something for it to appear. If you haven't seen it then it should be set to default. About the connection error, make sure you have a strong wifi signal on both the 3ds and your phone. In ftpd it should display the ip address and port. Keep repeating with AndFTP, click connect if it errors out, exit and repeat again.

This is what I see.
Accepted and 220 are when I start the server on the tablet and it asks me for a password
The next 2 lines that repeat are the 3 times I tried to connect before it booted me
