PS3 update 4.89 released…

Only a few hours ago, Sony released PS3 update 4.89, which is quite bizarre considering the store will be closed soon. This update for a now almost 20 year old console claims “you can enjoy additional features, improved usability and enhanced security.” With it.

the store wont close for now. the vita also received an update, its to increase account security, forcing you to use 2fa to login, stopping account creation on the console itself and linking to the web for account management

there are also regular updates for SSL certificates, or DVD licenses, etc.
Though it might not be the case this time, it will probably happen regularly even once the shop is closed.

yeah, AACS keys (bluray encryption keys) must be updated every 12-18 months, sometimes as little as 6 months. it's mentioned in the ps3 instruction manual actually.

apparently, Evilnat tweeted that he's going to release a 4.89 cfw, but it could take a while. I'm glad he's doing okay as I haven't heard a word from him, and the only place a can get in contact with him is github.

I thought that Sony decided when the AACS keys expire, it wasn't that they must be updated every 12-18 months but they use the keys expiring as a way to force us to update.

Though that policy was likely set when that made a difference. Maybe now though they are going to win, they beat rebug.

well, you'd have to test that by seeing if recent bd movies work in the console on 4.88. I don't know when those new discs come on the market, so you may have to wait a month or two to know for sure.

I thought we could see the certificates in the FW

But I'm sure Sony probably are still setting them to expire, what I'm saying is that they could probably set them to expire in 100 years if they actually wanted. Having them expire at all has literally zero benefit in terms of securing bluray, we can just pluck the keys out every 18 months. IF you can be bothered, the 4k keys are more interesting

I guess, but that's not for the average user. I don't think sony set them to expire but the bd association did of which sony is a member. sony does not own bluray.
