Valve releases 3D printing CAD files for the Steam Deck shell

The Steam Deck is almost here, but not quite just yet. If the anticipation is too much for you, though, you can soon have a Steam Deck in your hands immediately, technically. Valve has just publically released the CAD files for the Steam Deck, allowing users to 3D print the outer shell to the handheld device. Upon releasing the files, under the Creative Commons license, Valve encouraged curious tinkerers and makers to have fun messing around with the model, and to feel free to contact them regarding feedback and questions, as well as ideas for things that creators might come up with. You can grab the files from the GitLab page.

Wonder what will become of this -- we rarely see fun grips/shell replacements made for other things from those playing with CNC and 3d printers.

Valve keeps releasing pieces of useless information to keep people talking about the deck.

Last time literally was "the deck will release on the release date".

Edit: forgot to mention that Valve don't even need those silly news to promote the thing, if they just do as promised, the thing will sell out on every single batch they ever produce.

The Steamdeck runs pretty hot, so I sure hope prospective printing enthusiasts who want to play around with this don’t use garbo filament. I also advise against removing the grill from the back or moving it closer to the fan intake to “improve thermals” - it’s a negative pressure setup, the vent is there so that the battery doesn’t overheat (which it near enough does anyway, judging by the GN analysis). If you’re going to do anything like that, account for keeping everything in the original airflow path cool.

How to epically troll your PC gamer friend
Step one: buy a Nintendo Switch (OLED or original will work, Lite is a bit harder
Step 2: Adjust, print and paint the Steam Deck shell
Step 3: Brutally take apart the Nintendo Switch and make it fit into the printed Steam Deck shell
Step 4: Tell your friend that you got the Steam Deck early and give it to him as a present

They'll be epically trolled and even may want to murder you in your sleep!

Still a free system. Just make sure that all the Switch ports can be accessed.

Don't you try to troll me by essentially giving me a free Nintendo Switch. I dare you!

Thats a very good idea. Forget trolling yo friend, instead make a youtube early review video, you'd get a million views easy, just don't "switch" on the damn thing, just tell viewers there's an embargo preventing you showing the "deck" when it's switched on.

Unlikely to work as well as you imagine, since all the major relevant news outlets already received the real deal and are showing it off.

awesome, although this is basically just giving scammers a free way to easily replicate the steam deck's look and pass it off as real on sites like aliexpress and ebay

Did a few quick slices in Blender, but the estimate is telling me that it will take 5 and a half days to print... maybe I'll just wait for the real one lol

do 5% infil with two walls and print at like 0.32 layer height with 0.6 line width

Better yet, buy the cheapest tablet with a screen roughly that size, and a $5 gamepad, and build that into a Steam Deck shell.

Valve REALLY wants people to be able to mess with this thing. This is definitely so that people can make attachments to the shell without having to manually take all the measurements. Imagine an external battery or SSD holder that mounts to the back where your hands aren't at and connects through USB-C to the console at all times. It'd definitely be a viable alternative to blowing 150 extra bucks on a bigger internal SSD.

really excited to see what people make from this
