Monthly Update regarding December.

Honestly December brought about a lot of good things for the translation, but also some roadblocks.

First and foremost, I started writing a program that combines all of the algorithms. What it can do so far is decrypt one file type and find the files within a file. Then, what it's supposed to do is run a specific algorithm depending on what the file needs. However, one of the algorithms won't run on any file because, as it turns out it is part of a larger algorithm, so I need to get the rest of the algorithm for this to work on any file. I'll post an update when I figure out what to run to get any file decompressed.

Secondly, someone came forward to me and said they were working on a script translation for the second game. Considering both games have the same text (the second one has more content) we will be working together as translators. In other words, there is another Japanese to English translator.

Monthly Update regarding January.

There's a lot to uncover here, most of it good, but there's still a few problems. I'll start with the bad news first.

Bad News:
1. Some of the images used in the menu I can't render correctly. My guess is because these images are actually gifs, but that doesn't make a lot of sense. When I start working on menu translations, I'll start looking at my options.
2. One of the scripts containing text isn't formatted correctly. When I have to start working on that section of scripts, I'll look back over the code.

Good News:
1. There are now 4 people (including me) working on this English translation.
2. While I can't change the title, Cris98XX will be working on an Italian translation.
3. Most of the files have been ripped from the first game. For example, this is one of the background images (which you can see above in an earlier post I made):
bg01a_gim_00000010.png

This list of files includes the text.
4. Now that the majority of files have been ripped from the game, the translation part is now starting. I'll try to update posts with a status of overall game translation.

Currently, the overall game translation (from my end) is <1% complete.

Since you are a Brazilian like me I can suggest you a few places where you can gather info, tools and some guides actually too. The two main forums for that are romhacking(dot)net (if I'm not mistaken there was a PT-BR version perhaps?) and P.O.B.R.E. which is a PT-BR dedicated forum that has a lot of info to help you start. Aside from those two websites you can try to contact HNNEWGAMES on their blogspot, they are a nice group doing some great translations to our language for PSP, PS2, PS3 and etc... Although I don't know if they will help you in any way, but it is worth of a try. Wish ya luck!

P.S.: Oh yeah, check joao13traducoes blogspot for new translations, he also makes some of them and don't forget our golden boy Gledson999!

Thxx for the help man, have Discord ? If you have, send me in the private chat, let's talk hahahah

Monthly Update regarding February.

I'm going to stop posting monthly updates. Instead, I'll post each time we finish translating a Chapter of the game. Every couple of days or so I'll update the introductory post with my current status on the translation details. In other words, I'll update the status of each chapter's translation.

Here is the current translation status:
Total translation status of the the first game - <1%.
Chapter 1 - 5.7%
Chapter 2 - 0%
Chapter 3 - 0%
Chapter 4 - 0%
Chapter 5 - 0%
Chapter 6 - 0%

Images - 0%

I just wanted to say that I am looking forward to this project's completion.

I was previously planning to wait a couple years and play the games using an automated translation service like zTranslate. But your project both sounds like a much smoother and more satisfying experience,
Waiting ~5 seconds per sentence translation using slow automated translation programs quickly sucks the fun out of any visual novel.

Godspeed to your translation team!

Hey all, it's been a while since we gave an update. Some of you might not even know anything about this game.

1. What background knowledge of the series is necessary to fully enjoy this game?
  1. Future Diary’s main series, either the anime or the manga
  2. Hanako and the Terror of Allegory
Side note: None of us have completed this game in its entirety, so we’ll update this if there is anything else in the Future Diary universe you need to be aware of.

2. What is the game about?
Well, here’s what the back of the game’s case says:

H8r_C4RpuWkrpjKQCu733dH31V8movZxR8wl4JjYG4QpXS2voxGGuK46_LorxGMHK2UuefXS2oh1ReC25W9H5cE7oyv46u-JBCZ3IdMGVo-L_i9MqPd4VNWTU2oNmRWXoeo0tkBA

3. Is the game canon?
“The game’s story is completely original, taking place midway through the original series.” I can’t reveal anything more without spoiling the game, but it all fits into the main series’ storyline.
Additionally, if you’re someone who wants to know how it has a tangible effect on the main series, there is a lot of substantial evidence of effects on the main series. Although, again, spoilers.

4. When will the game be completely translated?
2022. My goal is to get the first game translated by Q1 of 2022, but that all depends on my coding and translating abilities.

5. Wait, did you say “first game”? How many games are there?
Depending on your definition, 1-4. Although, that list of “4” games includes the pachislot and pachinko which are not part of this translation. The full list is as follows:
  1. Future Diary - the 13th Diary Owner (2010)
  2. Future Diary - the 13th Diary Owner RE:WRITE (2012)
  3. Future Diary Pachinko (2016)
  4. Future Diary Pachislot (2018)
This translation project will first be translating Future Diary - the 13th Diary Owner because it’s easier coding-wise.

6. What’s the difference between these two games?
Here’s a list of all the new content in Future Diary - the 13th Diary Owner RE:WRITE:
  • All chapters received extra content + a new chapter
  • Some scripts were revised (mostly changes that are near impossible to translate)
  • Voice Actors (the first game came out before the anime)

7. Okay, so just extra content, why won’t you translate the one’s with VA’s in it first?
It’s not that simple. The first game is much smaller, so it’s much easier to debug and test changes on. Additionally, with the second game, I have to code in subtitles.

(From here on out, when I say the game, I am only talking about the first game.)

8. How is the translation going?
Really good. Only one small problem.

Good Parts:
  • The game holds most of its data in a file with a unique file extension. I'll skip most of the nerdy stuff and say I finished writing the program to extract all of it’s contents.
  • After writing my program (somewhat) backwards, and changing the code in the game, I can change certain files and see those changes in the game relatively quickly.
  • There is another unique file extension inside of the game that contains images (which need to be translated). I’ve reverse engineered most of the file. I’d like to show some images, but we’re still working on the main menu.
  • The fonts are somewhat supportive and the second game has a much better font for English characters.
Our one small problem: In the game, the text is held in yet another unique file extension. I understand how it all works, but it’ll take some time to reverse engineer it.

9. So if it’s going so well, can we have an alpha version?
Soon. Before the end of the month we should have a portion of the game available to play.

Sincerely,
The New Future Diary Alliance

JackPyez - Image Editor
Sermeno14 - Reverse Engineer and TLC

If you have any other questions, I’ll do my best to answer any and all of them.

TL;DR: Alpha translation - end of this month. Full translation - 2022.

Alpha Release of Future Diary the 13th Diary Owner!

Here is the link to the patch enjoy! (Edit: right now there are a couple major issues that need to be resolved first, then the link will be re-uploaded)

Small Q&A:
Q. Wh wey does the Alpha Release contain such little content?
A. It's mostly a proof of concept, you all can now see we can add in English dialog with relative ease. Additionally, in the coming weeks (excluding next week because I (Sermeno14) will be on vacation) we'll add translated dialog to the game week by week. Don't worry, this dialog added each week will be much more than you see here.
If there are any bugs, Japanese (before the Alpha version ends), or translation errors please let us know!

Sincerely,
The New Future Diary Alliance

I have tried and failed to extract this games res.ptd archive numerous times in the past (search terms about the ptd archives online and you'll find numerous posts from me) so good job for the successful extraction and it's good to put the issue at rest in my mind. I'm afraid I can't send a private message due to my post count but if you ever find the time I'd be very glad if you could walk me through how you found the correct parts of the disassembly and realized their structure as I have always failed at this fact.

Hey, Future Diary/Mirai Nikki fans, we’re back with another update on the game Future Diary - the 13th Diary Owner’s translation!

TL;DR There’s a couple programming issues that need to be fixed. If you are familiar with C or MIPS feel free to help!

If you remember a while back, there was an Alpha Version we released. In this was the prologue and the main menus translated. I gathered some user feedback and some of our teams’ feedback on it. As a result, there are a total of 9 issues/situations that need programming to be resolved. After these are done, unless there is some major issue in the future, programming will be practically unnecessary for the games’ translation.

Keep in mind, anything we show here is tentative and may not be in the actual translation.

Anyways, here are some of the big issues that will be fixed in the next release.

The Font

The game was obviously made for Japanese and Japanese only.

Side note: There are a couple parts where English-only text is shown. For example, because Takao Hiyama (3rd) is an English teacher, English-only lines are written. However, there are few lines like this and they’re written in a way not helpful for our translation. In fact, they’ll need to be modified because they won’t look like the rest of the translation.

So when we overwrote the game’s text to include English lines, it did not look nice. In fact, it was one of our biggest complaints from users.

oj0piSMBzP8-EXvJfOOKcGWs67D15vzmJbmYQJAKI_VLoL_9cpdtQPiwWsdmHeiYkFff4wI4SU0zt73dcSvyscqG1Tz6dVRjL8Nca29shh5QF-moZJQlAve0xPDbwrwd9r7mDh_s=s0

Of course, it suffices. It looks irritating to read, but you can still read. However, with a little moving around, we found the game contained a font for “debugging.” Upon switching the font to the debug font, we found a much better solution.

Side note: The switch in font allows more letters to be in a dialog box than the original font. So this change helps more than just readability.

CYQtJ1LzeVFvtNGwhmla07fL_m8p_hW_MTNOTLRH98bMbu2vXgLNGay_s0nYQ584ee-Vy_NSxlFCHC0k71A7v4Oy32xEhyn5EtAJokSW00qcbB6v-I-oIZhOrgefLbxcO4IR3tNA=s0

With this, the readability is saved! Except now the font has halved in size and some characters aren’t presented correctly.

5h1gLK-btc3ogFI2_IsnobCjbqKp2pyhkOd3JZXq0cIcFcl3kdqdUfSig6OLNvBVx8fhQ7g8HMxqJezlnpVoPkzj_B-wqeBUEduQhyAGUtK6lbIHJSwb0uCZZGaUOblrbLBftEAB=s0

In conclusion, we’ll be spending some time resolving the issues with the font. Don’t worry, it is one of the easiest issues to resolve because we already know (for the most part) how it works.

Dialogue Boxes’ Character Limit

In the game, each character speaks in either a “miniature” or “full-sized” dialogue box. For the sake of clarity, I’ll only be talking about the “full-sized” dialogue boxes.

The dialogue boxes have enough space to contain 80 half-width characters. Which works fine in Japanese. However, in English, certain characters have a much longer translation than the Japanese character/phrase. For example, 雪輝 is 4 half-width characters, but it’s translation, Yukiteru, is 8 half-width characters.

uIppa4N7AB4riYfi8Gu6hDehK7Bzm0L4Aav2nkVMcZ9mtyx3IdguG9qyoCexvmCNDj2rChzkrBNpdf8-6rQZzBf-_-tEZeUtJ-OKKFMLP9W-dCdhJ50VU4fEDbhsSZKkPB7pvZov=s0

So the fix is simple, add in more dialogue boxes! One small problem, the game did not want anybody to mess with their text, and adding in more dialogue is even more difficult. In fact, it requires the file to be rewritten manually.

Side note: Each text file, or script file as well call them, has 5 separate files, a “director” to another “director” file, a second “director” which describes how functions work in the script file, a list of data points, a list of text points, and the dialogue + data itself. Therefore, the sheer number of content makes it difficult to fully understand these text files.

In conclusion, it’s not impossible, but adding in extra text boxes takes a while, mostly because a program will need to be written to make “new” files.

The PLACE Command’s Character Limit

In the text files, there is a command/function called PLACE followed by a location (duh). When the player runs over this function, it causes the game to “display” your current location.

KW-tFIKVkZ8JOAETGkTutSQBseVuCL9d5zOrCWuxXNRaeBoy3dHMgbtaIedhzilXeT-TafwheUOwO6jyvAKIitTJBeK__H4k5Px4ZJcpJQnwM0OQC3ohnuDIgaU90FPbRJKnqw3Y=s0

For some reason however, the character limit on the text is different depending on where it is.

1hFPdO7umPGDUtuCiQupVKtQ_2AYNFp-9M5M9XguS7QrKIJc0Ali-MW4kgL62HboYPFlNhf35WyRJ0ioNgHo16vOpu0hTRz_PtLUobWhJTrRgTLq15dtIbNWZivNcWDGp-Gxb4CK=s0

In conclusion, it’s fairly easy to fix, once we find out how it works.

Conclusion

Don’t worry, I’m not going to bore you with all of these intricate details about Future Diary’s code because - while I find it interesting - this was simply to show what we’re working on. Additionally, the other 6 issues are much more in-depth and require lengthier explanations.

If anyone would like to help out with programming and has experience in either C or MIPS, feel free to contact me (Sermeno14)!

Again, once all 9 of these issues are resolved we will never have to do any major programming (with the exception of bug fixes). From then, we’ll be releasing new parts to the translation, every week (or as often as we can).

Thank you all for all of your continued support!

Sincerely,
The New Future Diary Alliance

Ooh this is really interesting! Yeah, the font was something that kind of bothered me too ^^' Is it not possible to manually edit the glyphs?

Is it possible to manually edit the glyphs? If you mean change the texture.ini file, I don't think so. See, the way the game writes in letters is it grabs only the letters it needs for a sentence, but it won't grab extra letters. For example,
"Hello" it would find the font for H, e, l, and o.
Then for the next sentence,
"World" it would fine the font for "W" "r" and "d" as it already has "o" and "l" loaded.

If I were to edit the texture once all letters are loaded in, the game would not load the font properly before all the letters are loaded in. I would have to manually edit the file each time a letter is loaded in, making it a very time consuming process. There's another problem with doing this and shading, but this first explanation should explain why I shouldn't do it that way.

However, turns out a font from RE:WRITE used a font that already had g/j/p/q looking great, so all I had to do was edit it a little bit by messing with the file itself. Below are some pictures from the updated font. Let us know how this looks!

Save Data Menus:
ULJM05565_00000.png

Normal Text:
ULJM05565_00001.png

Colored Text:
ULJM05565_00002.png

The picture above reflects that we got the issue (shown below) with the location not displaying fully in the BACKLOG resolved.
1hFPdO7umPGDUtuCiQupVKtQ_2AYNFp-9M5M9XguS7QrKIJc0Ali-MW4kgL62HboYPFlNhf35WyRJ0ioNgHo16vOpu0hTRz_PtLUobWhJTrRgTLq15dtIbNWZivNcWDGp-Gxb4CK=s0

Additionally, the problem we were having before with our lack of space in dialogue boxes:
uIppa4N7AB4riYfi8Gu6hDehK7Bzm0L4Aav2nkVMcZ9mtyx3IdguG9qyoCexvmCNDj2rChzkrBNpdf8-6rQZzBf-_-tEZeUtJ-OKKFMLP9W-dCdhJ50VU4fEDbhsSZKkPB7pvZov=s0

Has been resolved because we now have more space for our dialogue:
Double Dialogue Boxes.png

We did fix one other issue which was the patch wouldn't work on actual PSP hardware, so in our next patch you'll be able to play it on official hardware!

We still have approximately 5-6 programming issues left which include:
  • Images not importing correctly into the game.
  • A graphical issue with the title screen.
  • Being able to modify the amount of text we use for certain areas of the game.
  • A limit on the amount of text space for DEAD ENDs.
  • Getting images to import into another file type.
  • Secret Issue 😏

Sincerely,
The New Future Diary Alliance

Hello everyone, I am a fan of the Mirai Nikki series and I recently discovered your project, it's something great!

I wanted to ask you a few questions;

1 - When will the translated version of the game be released? (If the project has not been canceled)

2 - In how many and in which languages will the game be translated? (only in English or in other languages such as French)

3 - How can we play the game, will it be a rom that we will have to run on a PSP emulator or will it be an .exe that you can run directly on Windows?

I find this great project, it will allow a whole community to discover a game unfortunately inaccessible because of the language barrier.

This project will contribute to the preservation of this game and even to the preservation of the Mirai Nikki serie in popular culture.

You have my full support for this project :)

I wanted to ask you a few questions;
I'll bother to answer these (naive, to say the least) questions, for not annoying the author.
1) This is a question that should NEVER be asked and that those who work (for free) on a translation project rightly resent!
2) Obviously only in english, and perhaps in the author's language (at his discretion), not yours.
3)This question is absurdly unbelievable but I will answer it anyway: obviously it will be a patch, probably in xdelta format to be applied to the PSP ISO of the game, legally obtained from the original disc.
Can it ever be that a rom is distributed on this site? The mere mention of it could get you banned.
Have I explained myself? [maybe I was a little bit harsh...........naaaaaaaah! :rofl2:]

I just saw the message you just posted, I have no luck seeing that it is on a particularly scornful haters that I fell.
My post was not meant to be boring, rude or naive, I just wanted more information on this project which interested me a lot.

To come back to my 3 questions;

First of all, I just wanted to know if the project was progressing well, without difficulties and if it was continuing.

Then I read in the previous posts that the game can be translated into multiple languages like Italian, so I wanted to know if other languages would be part of it (including mine)

And finally, my last question may seem absurd to a big geek with glasses, but me, I know absolutely nothing about rom hacking, so I wanted to know if indeed, the translation would be a patch to apply to the original game, a rom .iso which can be run directly on an emulator, or an .exe with an installation setup containing the files mentioned above.

In short, avoid talking badly to people who don't know much about it and who ask a question nicely.
So, it's not me but you who are annoying :(

In truth, I have not spoken badly of anyone: in what I have written there is not a shadow of offense. I may have been a little harsh, and I apologize. I wrote between the serious and the facetious, and you still got the answers you were looking for. As you can see, no one else has come forward to reply.
Come on, let's make up. ;)

P.S. "Big geek with glasses" instead is an offense as...... I don't have glasses. :rofl2:
