Two years ago the Wii Shop Channel closed, making the only way to install its content using a .wad file and a wad manager. However, we can't just let it fade away. With this post i propose a project to reverse-engineer the Wii Shop Channel, and bring it back to its former glory.

Creating a similar channel would not be the problem, but the rights to all the games belong to their developers/publishers so making them accessible through a new channel would be illegal.

As bixxewoscht said, getting unencrypted copies of games and sharing them on a Wii Shop Channel alternative is like waving your rear end directly in Nintendo's face and asking them to shoot you. (weird analogy but you get my point)

The Wii Shop Channel itself doesn't need to be reverse engineered. The problem isn't that we don't know how to distribute and install WADs conveniently, we already have tools like NUSDownloader. The problem is that Nintendo delisted all of the games on the Shop Channel and closed off any method of legally purchasing them. You can still redownload these games but you need the "ticket" which contains the encryption key necessary to install the downloaded software. Making another Shop Channel is not going to solve this problem.

What if we created a borrowing system where you could play the game from a server so instead of giving full permanent access people would get temporary access and maybe the wii could store the game save so that the Wiis won’t get full
