Tesla - The Nintendo Switch Overlay Menu

Hey all.
I'd like to introduce to you, Tesla: My answer to the growing need for proper ingame front ends for sysmodules.

What is this?

  • Tesla consists of three individual parts. nx-ovlloader, the Tesla menu and libtesla.
    • nx-ovlloader is basically nx-hbloader ported to run as a sysmodule. It runs in the background and loads overlay NROs (.ovl files) given to it.
    • Tesla Menu is the equivalent to the hbmenu. It's the initial thing loaded by nx-ovlloader and acts as a hub for you to select all other overlays.
    • libtesla is where it becomes interesting for developers. It's an easy to use library that handles layer creation, UI drawing and all the overlay UX. It makes it very easy to create a new overlay for anything
  • A frontend for sysmodules that before required either a homebrew or a config file to change settings or used sounds or the LED to give the user feedback.

What is this not?

  • A tool that lets you create overlays that are always visible. Overlays can get unloaded way to easily for this.
  • An excuse to port absolutely everything to a overlay. Nobody's going to need a title manager overlay. If you consider making a overlay, keep it simple. You don't have a whole lot of memory to work with.

How do I use this?

First of all, download the latest release of nx-ovlloader and the Tesla Menu from the GitHub Release page and extract it onto your SD card.
After a reboot, hold down L and DPad Down and push on the right joy stick to bring up Tesla at any time. Navigation works as you imagine it.
Similar to normal homebrews, you place your .ovl files in the /switch/.overlays folder on your SD card.

Notice

Make sure to use the latest Atmosphere release when trying this as older versions ( as the one SX OS uses too ) probably won't have enough memory available for this to run. Overlays do take a lot of space so nx-ovlloader reserves 6MB. 2MB for framebuffers and around 4MB for overlay developers to use in their overlays.

Have you already tried with a clean install of Tesla? I remember the same happening to me after telling AIO Switch Updater to disable autostarting sysmodules after updating Atmosphere

I fixed the problem the other day. Thanks for replying though.

yeah I wondered if it was because atmosphere/contents is no longer where the overlay folders should be? can't get it to work either

when i push the button combination in switch menu everything shows up fine, load status monitor overlay and the moment i load any game, vanishes and only reappear in the switch menu
is this normal?

edit: i figured out

I'm on firmware 11.0.1, Atmosphere 0.19.1 but can't make Tesla work!
I put all the files on the SD but AMS crashes as soon as I turn the Switch on (An error has ocurred.. in program nx-ovlloader). Tried deleting the "boot2.flag" file on the content's folder, and then I can boot but as soon as I activate Tesla on Hekate Toolbox, AMS crashes!
I don't know what else to do, I tried uninstalling and installing like 10 times but can't get it to work. Any idea?

EDIT: Fixed it! Just needed to fix archive bit on Hekate

Is ovlSysmodules.ovl under the .overlays folder? I can't remember exactly what I did to get it to work. Also is OvlEdizon.ovl under the .overlays folder?

How did you resolve that issue? I got it working on main menu but can't seem to get it working in game.

Right click in the link and save link as... I don't know why don't work directly but this way work

I tryed, but it keeps downloading an invalid zip file.
Tryed in 3 different PC and phones (different internet providers too).

Is it possible to find somwhere else? I googled for it but people keep linking that url

Thanks in advance

EDIT: could be the same file you can download here? https://github.com/WerWolv/EdiZon/releases/tag/snapshot
I mean the .ovl obviously

@WerWolv Did the Atmosphere 0.19.3 broke the ovlloader? Everytime I try to reboot the Switch, it gives me error with the 420000000007E51A folder, so I need to delete this folder to make the Switch boot normally. Or is it some error on my part?

I would also like to know if this is broken on the latest Atmosphere 0.19.3.Espcially since on the git hub only the source is provided now.

I am on 12.0.2 and 0.19.3. I use the overlays sys-clk, simple mod manager, reversenx-rt, and fastcfwswitch. Everything seems to work fine so far.

Could you please share your files? Even with a clean installation of Atmosphere and all .ovl and ovlloader it seems to return the crash at startup for me. It only boots if I delete the 420000000007E51A folder at /atmosphere/contents
