Hardware Wii u doesn't recognize HDD

My wii u isn't recognizing my hdd, tried both back ports. this is the hard drive i used on my wii so it isn't broken, it also connects to my pc correctly, idk what i'm doing wrong

First time ever connecting it, i think it's y-cable
Edit: i just searched up what a y-cable is, it's definitely usb connected

So your not using a y cable then?
Is it a powered usb connector though as the wii u will not power your hdd through the usb port. It must be plugged into a power socket.

This is what a usb powered hdd looks like? i don't see any way to plug it into a socket

The Wii U does not deliver enough power through a single USB port, so you must use a Y-cable for the external HDD to use 2 USB ports.
It was not a problem with the Wii.

I'd recommend not to buy a cheap one! I tried this route and went through 3 before i settled for the uGreen sata to usb 3 adapter. Works a charm, well made and will save you money, time and hassle in the long run!
