I want to see if there are any wii emulators for the switch that run well so I can play games like trauma center

This. They're cheap and can play Wii/GC games natively. The emulation on N64 is great with retroarch. The official gamecube adapter let's you use real controllers and even special controllers like the bongos or DDR mats. You can use the classic NES/SNES controllers with it. Raphnet makes n64 adapters.
Mine is still connected to the TV just as a Nintendo archival machine. I can play every Nintendo home console with their original controllers on one system.
I did the same thing with my New 3ds. I leave them as just an easy way to play any Nintendo handheld. GB, GBC, GBA, DS, 3ds. The gyro in the 3ds can be used in games like Kirby tilt n tumble and Warioware twisted. The only feature it doesn't have is rumble for the maybe 5-6 games that had rumble built in or used the ds rumble pack.
It's a good point of archival, since the WiiU and the 3ds are the last time Nintendo had separate home console and handheld devices. With the switch they actually combined them together. And with Nintendo's track record on handhelds, I'm sure going forward they don't plan on separating them anytime soon. I'm sure the next gen console (think Switch 2 and not Switch Pro) will also be a combined handheld+home console. But that's obviously just speculation.

It honestly depends on what you want to run. New super mario bros and a few others will reach full speed. If its just one game you wan’t, just test it out on android/lakka/ubuntu(disable vsync). I doubt trauma center will be demanding so id try it out for sure.
If you want to play heaps of wii games homebrewed, dont buy a Wii u, just buy a Wii. Wii costs about 10$ second hand while the wii u is an effing rip off at closer to 100$. On the wii u, you also need to spend more money to purchase an eshop game, which is then used to inject the homebrew app used to run homebrew on the wii u.
