I've had a modde VWii for a long time.
Recently, my gran gave he her old Wii and I modded that, too.

I had an HDD, and after a few days of using it on my regular Wii, it started ticking, and computers would not spin it. The only way it could be spun was launching Wiixplorer beforehand.

I got a flash drive, and it didn't work for Wii games, but was perfect for GameCube games.
A couple of days ago, I got another flash drive and managed to get it to work for Wii games... but only twice.
Now, it won't load games (hangs on black screen) and now PCs won't load the drive. (Tested on Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 and Macbook Pro), hell, not even the Wii will load it.

Has anyone else have this problem? (Which I have dubbed the Drive Kill problem)

I recently read that you shouldn't leave the hdd or flash drive plugged in, but I don't know if that's true. I've had some hard drive problems with the virtual wii only. the wii u drive and wii work correctly.

The Flash Drive "Issue" mostly appears when it comes to the Write Cycle (Ripping/Installing Games or using an emuNAND for Example). Many Flash Drives/USB Sticks/Thumb Drives/Pen Drives will fail with Time without warning.:(
It is maybe known (or not) and mentioned/explained in many, many Threads on GBAtemp,to avoid them for the Wii/vWii and Wii U.:)

For the HDD - the Wii U (vWii) has a more "worse" Power Providing than the Wii.
Also for this "Issue" there are many Threads on GBAtemp for using an HDD with an Y-Cable or with an Power Supply to also avoid this Problem.:)

Thank you.:)

I'm aware that the flash drives aren't advised, but, again, my HDD is broken.
Also, sorry if this comes off as rude, but this doesn't answer my question at all...

On my Wii U, I left my HDD plugged in nearly 24/7 unless it was being moved or something. It wasn't until I got the original Wii when it started dying, so I doubt it's true.
I could be wrong, though.

Did you maybe also read the Second Part of the Post ?

Did your HDD have one of these please ?

The HDD does not have a Y-Cable.
Also, yes, I did read the second part of the post, but I'm still not sure I get it.

If I read this correctly, alexander1970 is suggesting that perhaps your drive is receiving insufficient power from the USB port to function correctly. Try using a self-powered drive (one with it's own power supply) instead of the USB-port powered drives. I don't know about the Wii U, but I've read that Wii's USB power provision is the suck.

Actually, the reason I came on here is perhaps related to your issue. Is it correct that storage has to be connected directly to the Wii? ie storage can't be accessed through a hub?

Hello,
