i have had my switch about a year and would like to mod it to play backups etc

whats the best course of action to take 1st ?

The first thing before anything if you havent already checked, is going to ismyswitchpatched.com and finding out what model it is. Because unless its an older model your not going to be able to do pretty much anything for now.

A year old means it's probably patched. If you had kept it on firmware 4.1 (which it might have come with) there is a software method for that firmware but otherwise, you are probably out of luck unless you were lucky and got old stock and can use the RCM exploit.
