Hacking System update on a unpatched switch question.

HI this is a quick one.
I've recently bought a faulty switch for parts.

Received this morning, plugged it in, the bolt came on for charging so I left it, held the power button down and proceeded to get into the system

The unit its a unpatched model on 9.1. It has a few games from the eshop installed.

I would like to update it to the latest firmware just to test, would this have any negative effect?
Console currently has parental controls enable.
Thinking I may need to homebred to remove the parental controls?

Unpatched units are vulnerable to fusee gelee exploit no matter what FW ver. they have installed. So, yes, you are fine updating to the latest FW and then doing CFW related stuff if needed.

I'm right in thinking I need to use homebrew to use the paternal control tool after fw 8.1?
Ive only ever used the tool for 3ds.

I can't say anything about it since i've never dealt with parental control in any way. But there are plenty of guides about removing it so i don't thinks its a big problem.
