Hacking Best way to hack a Launch PS3 Fat?

I got my japanese launch PS3 today and was wondering what the best way to hack it is.

Do i really need to do all that 4.8.2 CFW stuff or can i downgrade straight down to 3.55 and install CFW from there?

You should indeed update to 4.85 HFW twice from a mbr/fat32 drive (the 2nd time must be done from recovery mode), then use the PS3Xploit Flash Writer, nand variant, your choice of usb or hdd variant but I recommend the latter, to do a "noFSM patch" (which enables the installation of a 4.85 CFW); read the official instructions on psx-place (which include a preventive nand backup and verification) if you prefer

No downgrade is involved nor needed (the whole point of the noFSM patch, even though that term is mostly associated with hardmods it's the same thing being done here, is that you don't need to downgrade but can immediately install a CFW afterwards)
