Hello everyone. Firstly, the irony of this post is my name is Handheld Vet, but I'm in need of a fair bit of help if someone can spare the time & patience with me. Today I switched on my hacked 2DS for the first time since about 2017, and it's in need of some updating around the place.

Question 1. I need an update to the system software, I know I can update it as long as I update Luma, this question is....how the hell do I do that?.

Question 2. Is there any new way of accessing freeshop?. I've not used it in a long time, so my app plus the link are likely to be long broken.

Question 3. I have a megaton of stuff backed up on an external (https://ibb.co/j656tsS , https://ibb.co/grwsTsj , https://ibb.co/Hz0ymP8) and I'm wondering how much of this I actually have to keep now? I have a folder with about 50GB of stuff in it.

Question 4. Is there a new piece of software I'm missing that's any good? I've not kept up to date with any of it so I'm unsure.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to this sort of stuff, as I need my hand holding.

My system version is 11.0.0-33E
My hourglass9 is version 1.10
My luma is version 5.5

I really hope someone can help, it'll be greatly thanked!.

Thanks guys!.

1. Follow this guide to update to boot9strap (and the newest luma): https://3ds.hacks.guide/a9lh-to-b9s
2. freeshop is dead, sadly. If you have cias, you can use them, and FBI to install them (the guide will update FBI for you).
2b. There is also custom-install, to install cias directly to the sdcard, without copying the to the sdcard, or using wifi. (https://gbatemp.net/threads/custom-...a-nintendo-3ds-sd-card-entirely-on-pc.551496/)
3 . If you have games already installed, the update will not remove them. I would just keep the games, saves, and a NAND dump (or make a new one). All homebrew you need, just download it again.
4. There is Twilight menu for playing NDS games without a R4, and PSX emulation working pretty well (if your 2DS is a new 2DS)

1) Use the built in settings for your 3ds
2) Freeshop and all equivalents are dead. Find files via google
3) All you should really need is a valid nand backup preferably stored in 2 or more places other than that a fresh install should work every time

Q1. Yeah, you've been away from the modding community for quite some time. Hourglass9 has been obsolete for a while, with godmode9 taking its place. Also, you're probably running arm9loaderhax (or A9LH for short). That is also obsolete and replaced with boot9strap.
To get you back into speed follow this guide to go from A9LH to B9S easily. This should also get you godmode9 and the latest version of Luma3ds, which is on v10.0.1 at this time.

Q2. As for freeshop and the like, afaik, they were all thanos'd from existence thanks to Nintendo Ninjas. You can still get CIAs from a simple google search. (please stay wary of viruses and only get what you already own).

Q3. Keep them handy as they are all still very important in case anything happens to your 3DS.

Q4. As well as the newer version of Luma3DS (which adds a ton of features, such as the Rosalina Menu and LayeredFS), B9S and GM9, there is also newer homebrews you should look in to, such as Checkpoint the save manager for 3DS & Switch, as well as TWiLight Menu++, the successor to TWLoader, allowing you to natively run NDS games. There's also my personal favorite CTGP-7, a Mario Kart 7 mod that takes advantage of Luma3DS's LayeredFS, and adds new characters and tracks, as well as constant updates, with v1.0 coming soon.
There are also plenty of new Homebrews to choose from, all just a google search away.

I hope I answered your questions, and you can readjust to the community after all these years. :yay3ds:

Thanks man. It does seem I've been away for a lifetime compared to what's been happening here lol. I've followed the guide, and got boot9strap, luma and a new system update. I carried on with it, and I'm seemingly going good up to now.

With the twilight menu, do I need to move my NDS games from my R4 card over to my SD for ease?.

You're welcome :)
I'm happy to have helped.

You could, but there is a way to allow Twilight Menu to run ROMs stored on flashcards. I haven't tinkered with that feature much, but you could give Twilight Menu's page a read. From what I understand, only a few flashcards are supported at the time.

Thanks pal. I'm sure I've got another 100 questions, but I can only think of one at the moment. On my home screen, I've got a block of HB launcher v1.1, sysUpdater, Luma3DS updater, freeshop, encTitleKeysUpdater, FBI & DevMenu. They've been on my screen before I've done all this boot9strap updating, which ones of those blocks can I go ahead and remove?.

And, can I remove them through the data management screen?. Unless I'm supposed to, I can't see why I'd need to remove them from the SD card?.

the more usefull apps that i use are anemone theme manager, for custom themes, and checkpoint to backup your games and use cheats. But there's also ModMoon, a mod manager, ctrRGBPATTY, to set custom colrs on your alert led, and many others.
