Got a backup of Crash Team Racing Nitro Fuelled on my emuMMC. Yesterday I installed a 2 GB update but when I saw that all the added features are online-exclusive (can't go online on emuMMC) I felt like that was a waste of space so I decided I'd clear that 2 GB of space. How I did it was delete the game (and its save, probably unnecessary) via System Settings and then install it a new without that large update.

It's installed again (without that update) and when I try to launch the NSP, I get this odd message:

A software update is required.
Update data will be downloaded now.

Obviously, nothing will get downloaded without an online connection being possible on emuNAND.

I have a couple theories myself as to what this could mean:

1) The console 'remembers' that I used to have the update installed, and won't accept the raw original version of the game being installed as being 'playable'. Idk what to do if this is the case.

2) The software that needs updating is actually emuNAND's firmware; it doesn't refer to the game. Mine is 8.1.0 (AMS 0.9.2).

3) It could also be a problem with Tinfoil. The latest update is said to be from Sept 15. I think I updated it last a couple days prior to this.

But I have no idea which one it is, and how to make the game playable again. I figured somebody here would.

Is it also a problem with Crash team racing?

BTW, all my other NSPs are loading fine. I've installed two new ones today and they also both work. I have a feeling 1) is correct?
none of my nsps work but i jailbroke my switch after 9.0

This.

As far as I can remember, you have to delete the "ticket" of the game/update using a homebrew app.
I think it was goldleaf, but I'm not sure.
I had a similar problem once, just delete the ticket, remove the game aand reinstall.

I wish I hadn't followed this advice. Removed all the tickets associated with Crash Team Racing with Tinfoil. Nothing. After this, I went on and deleted "unused" tickets and ones with non-English titles. Still no result, and now I can't even play the DLC portion of Fire Emblem Three Houses anymore. No idea how to make it playable again. I don't remember downloading any tickets specifically to play it.

And it keeps giving me the same error message. Before I re-installed the game, it was a different one - it would 'check' if I were able to play the game, and fail.

So now I have more problems than what I'd started out with.

As far as I know, ticckets aren't downloaded. They're installed when you install an nsp (game and/or dlc).
So if you delete one, when you install the nsp it would install again.

Now, you should not have removed tickets that you didn't know what were they from.

The new error says (after choosing the user):

Checking whether this software can be played...

then

Error Code: 2154-0107

An error has occurred.

If the problem persists, please refer to the Nintendo Support website.
support.nintendo.com/switch/error

I've tried almost everything, including re-installing the game AND the useless 2 GB update again. No luck!

No idea if using DevMenu would change anything. It can't hurt to try.

Has nobody found the solution to this problem yet?

It's just happened to me again. This time I installed two battle wave packs for Pokken Tournament. I try to launch the game, it tells me to go online. I can't do that on emuNAND obviously, so I uninstall a single Pokken ticket. At this point I get the error I posted about in my previous message. I uninstall the game and discover it's not even on HBGShop anymore. Welp.

Maybe I should update emuNAND or something.

Without knowing exactly what you deleted, I have no idea how to help.
At this point I would just backup the savegames and just rebuild the emuNAND.
That's the whole idea of the emuNAND anyway, if you screw up you can just rebuild it.
