Hardware Can I replace existing 320GB hard disk without using backup/restore feature?

I have a 320GB PS3 on cfw. I want to install a 1TB hard disk, not bothered about current files, save games and trophies can I simply do the following?

1. Take out old hard disk.
2. Replace with new hard disk.

Boot up system and use with new hard disk.

Yeah 1.5tb max to not have any issues.
