So, I've been wanting to play ds games on handheld but not wanting to buy a new ds. Is there an emulator that runs DS games on switch while positioning it vertically in table-top mode?

With the emulator melonDS you can do that.
You can choose how you want the two screens to be arranged on the switch screen.

However we have to wait atm for the hardware render update for it to have decent fps.

It's perfectly possible with MelonDS like people have said, but it runs poorly atm. If it's something you're interested in, I recommend a Flip Grip for when it does eventually improve. This is what it ends up looking like:

Edit: For what it's worth, I'm fairly sure it's possible for any emulator on RetroArch at the moment, since you can play with the screen sizes and orientation.

When I saw this thing my first concern was the fact that the ventilation slots are 50% covered by this thing.
Have you tried to run a game that heats up the cpu/gpu to see how it would affect the cooling/handeling?

I can't say I've tried anything overly demanding, mainly because the games that benefit from it aren't really too bad. Pinball FX3 and Downwell are both great for what it's worth lol
